The only law that was enacted was that homosexual and ultra liberal extremist propaganda will be banned.
(Ari Gold, 20 January 2014 19:36)

What does "ultra liberal extremist propaganda" even mean ?!
----------

That's fine with me as Russia is a traditional society and it doesn't wish to be infested with such propaganda.
(Ari Gold, 20 January 2014 19:36)

Well, if you don't want to listen to ultra liberal extremist propaganda (whatever that means), nobody is going to force you to. So I don't get it what the ban is needed for. Russia is a democratic country that forces nobody to listen to propaganda they don't want to listen.
----------

You can be gay in Russia, you are not murdered for your sexual orientation like in most places in the Middle East.
(Ari Gold, 20 January 2014 19:36)

Yeah, that's true. In Russia, you would only be attacked and beaten, but not murdered.
----------

Oh no gays can't "celebrate" their sexuality on public streets, what a gross violation of human rights....
(Ari Gold, 20 January 2014 19:36)

Yeah, indeed, since it's not a gross one, but just a minor violation, it's fine

I am personally getting so, so sick of this constant putting homosexuals on a pedestal in Western society today! Every day one reads about gender, feminism, gays, lesbians etc. in the sick, liberal media and it is enough now! If they pay their taxes and don't commit crime, great, they should be afforded citizen rights like anyone else, but just because a healthy society does not want to allow gay marriage and adoption of children and thus the overall corruption of what a family should be in their society only to please some sexual deviants, does not mean this topic needs to be smeared all over the media to the point that any normal person is sick to their stomach!

This liberal technocrat doesn't to go to the Olympic opening ceremony? Great! To hell with him! Let him stay at home! This is a SPORTING event, not some political circus!

A principled stance by Paavo Arhinmaki - bravo! The Olympic games can be an international success and still a major embarrassment for Stalin. Can't wait... Roberto frisco

There's already been a scandal from an, I believe Swedish, athlete who painted her nails rainbow a few months ago at some competition in Russia.

As for people not being killed in Russia, you are unfortunately very wrong. There is a big rise in anti-gay violence after these new laws. You have thugs feeling permission to do this when you have ministers going on TV saying gays should be burned. You're obviously reading your news very selectively or not at all. google, "russian anti-gay violence". I don't feel like looking at a bunch of pictures of people beeing asaulted right now, so I won't do it for you.

No hate here, Ari.

Fact is, Russia spent 50 billion to shine a spotlight on it's increasing human-rights issues.

You can't find a single article about Sochi that doesn't mention this.

This is before they've even begun.

Wait till people start getting arrested for painting their fingernails in rainbow colors

I really don't see this working out well.

I guess we'll all see soon enough :)

Links about the Dutchies not wanting gay africans getting asylum in the Netherlands:

The Dutch Immigration and Naturalization Service had argued one could expect foreigners to exercise greater restraint in public about their homosexuality in their country of origin.

Pity these leaders can't deal with widespread hypocrisy, bigotry, racism, homophobia, islamiphobia and anti-semitism at home. Russia is an easy target.

Anybody see the news that the Dutch government argued at the ECHR that three gay African men who were claiming political asylum because of rampant homophobia in their home countries, don't have a right to asylum and should make a better effort to hide their sexuality.

Lithuania already has much worse anti-gay laws than Russia for the last few years, but they've been ignored.

It's good to be in the EU.

The games themsevles will be fine for the athletes. That is, if they've saved up enough snow in the warmest city in Russia during the warmest winter in a long time.

They'll also shine more light and attention on Russia's dark side than Russia would like and is prepared for.

(Danilo, 17 January 2014 22:56)

That's not true. During the Cold War a boycott meant the athletes don't go. Who gives a damn if politicians don't show up to the Olympics its not for them and their attendance is not required for a successful event. Don't allow your hate get in the way of logic.

It is a shame that sports have to be affected by the bigotries of others.

On the other hand, sport is too tied to single big prestige venues - so there is a price they occasionally have to pay for that association.

Embarrassment why? Because political leaders from liberal leaning parties will not be there? Last time I checked, the Olympics were about the athletes, not about these overpaid and politically correct bureaucrats. The Olympics will be just fine, all the best athletes from each sports will be there. God forbid Muslim extremists successfully attack a venue, that would ruin things. Otherwise, if cultural absolutists and ultra-liberal extremists like you and Ian UK are not there then that's more than okay.

Russia does not need NATO leaders at Sochi. The Winter Olympics will go-ahead with or without them and they will be a great success. The only thing Russia needs to look out for are NATO’s Chechin attack-dogs or their al-qaida franchise causing some atrocity.
