Let's not forget what actually happened in Croatia at the start of the war. The Serbs, with JNA support, began to rebel and take over Croatian territory. The Croatians, it bears repeating, did not attack Serbia or occupy Serbian land. Vukovar did not fall by accident. Things happened there to the Croatians which it is not so easy to forget, yet now they must satisfy the minority rights of the Serbs.

ya, but that's what so funny/absurd about all this. It's the Croats that go to great lengths insisting that Croatian is a different language from Serbian.

This whole business is a product of this Croatian insecurity. They've painted themselves into a corner with it.

There are those who insist that the Serbs in those areas are being discriminated against because they cant read or write in the Latin script, therefore the have to have Cyrillic as a basic human right.

This argument is utter nonsense. Why - all you have to do is look at the Serbian language version of B92 and you will discover (shock , horror) its written in the LATIN script.

Serbs speak the same language as Croatians, they can read the Croat alphabet and comprehend everything, they watch Croat TV shows and comprehend everything, they listen to Croat radio programmes and comprehend everything , they read their newspapers and magazines and comprehend everything , and SERBIAN news portals (e,g B92, Serbianna etc) use the latin script. Not to mention that Belgrade itself (and no doubt other major cities in Serbia) use the Latin script in its signage's etc.

Seriously, even the leader of the Serbs in Croatia was Deputy PM - under a Croatian right wing HDZ government!

This is nothing more than trying to portray the Serbs as victims of some imaginary conspiracy in the lead up to 2014 (100 anniversary of start of WW1)so when the historians, and politicians make speeches of wars and peace - the Serb politicians can blunt the associated guilt by implying imagined victimisation.

If the whole thing wasn't so idiotic it would be comical.

Balkan Antropologist when you typed "budala" didn't you just say fool or idiot in the Albanian language? I discovered some time ago online that budala means fool or idiot in that language.

Peggy, It's not a retaliation of what Croats are doing, it's been going on for years, without any comment or fan-fare in the media.

My point being that this cyrillics issue is just a distraction for everyone - you have idiots in Croatia getting their panties in a twist over an alphabet and you have idiots in Serbia doing the same.

As for going out and taking pics of this, I've already done it last year and posted pics in the comments when this issue came up. Search the forum. I'm not going to do it for you or go on some photography project for you.

meanwhile in Belgrade, 100s of dual-script street signs are spraypainted by gangs of extremists, spraying-over the latinic part of the sign.

Seeing how you see all this how about you take photos and show us.
Even if you see one I am sure it's retaliation for what Croatians are doing. Maybe not wise to retaliate the same way but enough is enough. It's time Croatians started behaving like the "gentlemen" they want us to think they are.

Croats disfigure the signs for now but Serbs themselves will come under attack soon enough. This is a taste of what's to come I fear.

Uh oh, another broken comment from Bam Bam, the American with debatable Croatian ancestry.

Let's see if we can fix it up for him:

Even Croats from Istria are being hired by HDZ politicos to carry out primitive acts of racism and intolerance. The fledgling Serb minority will continue to suffer because of endemic extremism cultivated in Croatian political culture since Tudjman carved a state out of Yugoslavia using soft core NDH rhetoric beliefs. If only these poor misguided disciples of the "Antimurale Christianitatis" would focus their efforts looking for work and empowering a population neglected and ignored outside Zagreb and the tourist zones of Dalmatia, as they are trying to scapegoat all their problems and mishaps on Serbs, Gays, Slovenes, and enemies of Lijepa Nasa they may just be considered human and not donkeys.

There, I think I made it better, though I doubt he'll understand. NDH wannabes rarely do. Especially those who've never lived in the country they think they belong to.

Za dom budala!

Bam Bam - Thank you very much for such an intelligent and thoughtful comment. Your thoughtful insight has definitely made me re-think my views and challanges the boundaries of intellectual thinking in the region. I would be so proud of you if you were my son but you would never want that as I am a Serb from Lika. Or perhaps you would - jealousy is a strange thing.

Now take a look at that........ even left wing Croats from Istria don't want anything to do with lettering no one can read. The fledgling Serb minority will continue to suffer because of Pupovac's Chetnik beliefs. If only the Serbs would focus their efforts looking for work as they are trying to introduce Cyrillica they may just be considered human and not donkeys.
