@ Canadian: Living in Vancouver how do you know the French are proud to be Canadian?? Remember Meech Lake? What about the PQ's policies? Live in Quebec, New Brunswick, or Ottawa and see the contempt for our true north strong and free. I know full well that not all French speaking Canadians are like that, but you must be truly naieve to hold that POV. I'm not here to argue either, but you seem to be missing the point. Look and Balkan Anthropoligist's comment above..Why would the Serb's assimilate?? Croatia just became a country, and those Serb's living there for hundreds of years were there before it was Croatia.

Is there a Chinatown in Vancouver? Just like Toronto I'm sure there is an abundance of signs in Chinese. Every Serb know's how to read latin script, but if they have access and a right to cyrilic script, why deny them of that choice?

Pretty soon, the only place using Cyrillic is Vukovar
(Danilo, 7 January 2014, 11:37)

Unfortunately for you I live in Belgrade so go lie to someone else. The signs are in both cyrillic and latin but the official written language is cyrillic, not latin.

@waiters I understand what you are saying but to compare the french in canada to the serbs in croatia is completely different.. The french in canada are proud to be canadian...and consider themselves french speaking CANADIANS! and the difference between english and french is far greater than Croatian and Serbian..the serbs in croatia do not consider themselves croatian at all. They don't assimilate or call themselves orthodox CROATIANS? tell me why that is? even after living in the region for hundreds of years they reuse to call themselves croatians? there are big minorities in canada but we do translate their languages. I'm from vancouver and there is a huge asian community. Yet everything is in english/french. At the end of the day serbs can READ croatian (latin writing)! they use it themselves when writing serbian. I'm not here to argue I am just stating the obvious..not one serb living in croatian can honestly come onto this comment board and tell me they can't read croatian signs in croatia to get around.

What do they need translations for? Sounds like Milorad Pupovac is trying to stir things up on purpose and it is not in favor of Serbs.
(mario, 7 January 2014, 16:55)

Because Croats have insisted "Croatian" is different from "Serbian" and as such deserve two langauges. In addition, before Tudjman turned Croatia into a soft-core fascist state in the 1990s, Serbs in Croatia has been using Cyrillic as their alphabet of choice. The use of the Latin script only was used as a universal alphabet following the Second World War, and even after that, Cyrillic was used. Sorry this is so hard for you to figure out, but sure, you go ahead and blame the minority for screwing it up for the majority's in insensitivities. No better yet, you just mindlessly blame the Serbs for whatever problem someone else created.

Diaspora nationalists are so funny.

This is only a provocation like this Milorad Pupovac constantly provokes Croatia and Serbia equally in his favor. Serbs can read Croatian writing just fine. They read and write in latin writing in serbia also. What do they need translations for? Sounds like Milorad Pupovac is trying to stir things up on purpose and it is not in favor of Serbs. Milorad Pupovac is screaming to the world look at what we Serbs did in Vukovar. You really believe Serbs don’t have Serbs traitors then you really naive and believe in fairy tales.

@ Canadian....??????? Are you really Canadian? Or do you live in Canada and pretend to be a Canadian. First, Latin script was NEVER Serbia's. I find your statement both ignorant and embarrassing. If you are indeed from Canada, you will notice that everything in CANADA is written in English and FRENCH..All French people know how to speak English (remote areas in Quebec excluded) Does that mean,as a Canadian, you should deny there rights to have information presented in French? Hell NO!!Aren't the Serb's in Croatia entitled to have information presented to them in Cyrillic? Of course!!! Yet, according to you, the Serbs are trying to stir things up. What kind of moron are you??? You should be ashamed to call yourself Canadian, if you really are at all.

What I don't understand is that Serbs can read Croatian writing just fine. They read and write in latin writing in serbia also. What do they need translations for? especially the serbs that have lived in Croatia for generations. Its not like their Chinese and have no idea what it says in Croatian. Sounds like serbs are trying to stir things up on purpose. Plus most of the world knows the language as Serbo-Croatian so I just don't what all the fuss is about. Serbs in Croatia are just fine.
(Canadian, 6 January 2014, 22:36)

Lol only someone that has never been in Serbia can say that the written language in Serbia is latin. Newsflash for you= It is not. And the language is not serbocroatian its either Serbian or Croatian, huge difference. That serbs can read latin is not the question the question is that every minority has legal right to their own language, written or spoken and the croats dont respect the rights of a minority in this sense.

How can you say that serbs in croatia are just fine when before the war more than 30%of the population were serbs and now its down to merely 4% is that fine to you?

Let them go through the process of collective catharsis. Croats have a tendency of getting overly emotional over the wrong issues and end up making utter fools of themselves by the end when nothing they protest for or against is realized. At a time when economic conditions are pressuring its best and brightest to leave, the need to protect the "domovina" from the evils of gays, Serbs, and an alphabet is once again used to mask the real problems and encourage idiot offspring expats like Bam Bam and Lenard that prosperity is around the corner as soon as the last group of invented undesirables are dealt with. Nothing will come of this expect a portion of Ljepa Nasa's population once again demonstrating their inbred racism to the region.

I don't see the Hungarians or Italians raising their voices about how they treated

That's because there has never been a problem with Italian signs in Istria. Not sure about Hungarian, if there is Hungarian on signs anywhere in Croatia. I'll ask around.

Bam Bam

Seriously......Less than 4% of the population know how to read Cyrillic. It is not needed and its worthless to Croats. Pupovac needs to stop stating that minorities are being punished. No Pupovac its only the Serbs we have a problem with as you keep pushing your Chetnik traditions on the rest of us. I don't see the Hungarians or Italians raising their voices about how they treated. The Serbs need to pack up and join Dodo's fake RS where they can all sit around one large bonfire and tell stories of how close they actually came to creating a Greater Serbia free from non Serbs.
