"Today we are celebrating a great historical event that changed the face of the world, an event that divided the time into the pagan and the Christian," may not be exactly correct. Christianity have become an official religion of the Roman Empire in 380, not in year 313 AD.

Edict of Milan merely stopped prosecution of Christians, and established freedom for all religions for the first time as Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew pointed out.

"He pointed to the persecution of Christians before the Edict of Milan was issued, adding that the Edict is the source from which the principle of religious freedom arose and was proclaimed to the entire world. "

Quote

"When you see that this has been granted to [Christians] by us, your Worship will know that we have also conceded to other religions the right of open and free observance of their worship for the sake of the peace of our times, that each one may have the free opportunity to worship as he pleases; this regulation is made that we may not seem to detract from any dignity of any religion.
