Citizens safety is more important that any gathering, parade and such. People have to realise that you can't force this kind of thing. Parade will be held when Serbian society is ready for it, and not before.

3 days ago I said that it was not the theme of the parade (Gay Pride) that was the relevant issue but the message that the police and others sent to the EU by claiming not to able to secure such a small scale event from the threats of hooligans. Mr Davenport clearly agrees. Personally I do not believe that accession talks should be delayed solely on the basis of this decision but it is clear that actual membership of the EU, should it still be desired in 8-10 years time,is a pipe dream whilst inability or unwillingness to protect everyone's basic rights is prevalent.

"It is very important to show that the extremist groups are actually a threat to the entire society," Tanjug quoted Davenport as saying, and adding that the authorities should demonstrate that they are ready to protect human rights including the LGBT population, and that violence will not be tolerated

Instead, according to the Serbian government, the pride parade is the thread to security, not the various extremists and hooligans. The authorities demonstrated once again that they are either not willing or not able to protect human rights against extremists, and that threatening with violence is tolerated as a means of reaching a political goal. Sad, but true.
