Chemical weapons used in Syria, unclear by whom

UN investigators have said that there is "compelling evidence" that the nerve gas sarin was used in a missile attack in Damascus last month, reports the BBC.

..without threats from the US there would be no attempt to seek a diplomatic solution.

..without a continued implied threat, it is likely that there will be nothing done to get rid of Assad's chemical weapons.

Assad wins this little game however - he gets more time to continue his other methods of suppressing the population.

Putting aside everything else, who would gain the most from chemical weapons use? Assad is no paragon of virtue, but he knows very well that it would lead to US invasion and his subsequent death. The rebels, who have direct links to Islamic terrorist groups, would then have a significantly greater chance of taking control of Syria. The rebels are the only ones who have something to gain from chemical weapons use.
