Serbs in Croatia should have the same rights as Croats in Serbia, nothing more and nothing less. Same with Kosovo Serbs should have the same rights Albanians have in FYROM and Presevo nothing more and nothing less.

@ Danilo..Hmmm. I don't know. Could it be that they were born there and it's their home?
How come hobby Croats/Serbs living in the USA/Australia are such creeps? such armchair thugs cheering for war and ethnic cleansing.

Well if they were born there then stop crying like sore losers and accept the country you live in (Croatia) and not some make believe 'Krajina' which you people still dream about. I have never seen a minority group whinge so much like the Serbs. The Serbs want everything given to them on a silver platter, well let me tell you something YU is no more , so go out and actually work for what you have or is that to hard.

@Aleks

You too believe that Yugoslavia crap? Tell me, is the Scottish referendum now part of a wide conspiracy to dissolve the UK or was it only Yugoslavia that was worth the experiment? The kind of things people believe really astound me. Slovenia & Croatia declared their independence in 1991 and neither were recognised until 1992. The break up of Yugoslavia was a big problem for the West, in no way was it a convenience. As for your assertion that it would have challenged powerful EU states, I'll tell you freely that you're dreaming. Who on earth wanted to buy Zastavas and Gorenjes when you had Renaults, Mercedes and Philips and JVC's? Yugoslavia was a complete joke. It badly needed reforming as it was borrowing way more than it was producing, it's failing industries were propped up with borrowed money and sadly the three largest ethnic groups, turned on one another. It's easy to blame others it really is, but blaming Yugoslavs is what you should be doing.

@Nikolle, you know better than to comment the great powers didn't shell Sarajevo. Back door behind the scenes dealings, armament of all sides. Explain how Wesley Clark has a hand in the Tripce mines & Madeline Albright in Kosovo's telecom? How can two leaders of the war in Kosovo leave their post & start raping land like that, & not have implications of outside interference? Why was the cigarette factory bombed, then bought by Phillip Morris? Why even bomb that? It's beyond religion in the Balkans, although it plays a factor. Those that are corrupting religion for hatred are using it as the final piece of the puzzle.

The US, Germany, France, UK, etc couldn't allow a self sustaining country with a strong economy and strong military (remember, we were the #3 military in Europe) with good relations with Russia to emerge in the middle of their EU eutopia. YU would have had a strong influence and voice on many factors. Look at it another way too. Croatia has entered the EU. Everything that has been privatized, how much is owned by Croatians? How much by US, Spanish, German, British? The Croatian currency, is not theirs! They don't control it! Remember this quote by Mater Amschel Rothschild 'give me control of a nations money supply and I care not what laws they make". It's easier to plant the seeds of dissent, and then watch them destroy each other, & then come in as 'saviors' when they helped push the chaos in the first place.

YU failed, but it had great potential.

bam bam i'll answer your question as simply as i can. then please answer mine.
the serbs wish to stay in croatia because it is their home.
now, please extend the same favour:
why do croatians want to stay in croatia, and in herzegovina?

Danilo

Why is it that the Serbs want to live in Croatia. What is so special about Croatia that the Serbs would do anything to stay....Croatia has no gold, no oil, no jobs, no gas so what is it, there must be a reason.

If Serbia didn't allow the same how soon before EU told them unless they do they won't be eligible for EU membership?
(Peggy, 9 September 2013 22:39)

What's Croatia "not allowing"?

It's Croatian law that's requiring the signs to be put up and Croatian police protecting them with an anti-riot squad.

Far-rightist thugs in Serbia are doing the same thing in Serbia as these chauvinistic thugs are doing in Croatia - destroying signs with latinic script. Could we use the same standard and say "Serbia isn't allowing latinic script". No, because that would be ridiculous, of course.

Yes, the Great Powers chose to pick on the south Slavs. It was them who were shelling Sarajevo, not the Yugoslavs themselves. I agree with you Aleks, ethnically, you're essentially the same group, but the reason why you will never be one, is because you choose religion. Serbian national identity has been shaped by your Orthodox Church, who still hold a big grip on power over them, the Catholic Church for Croats and you both look at Bosnians as Turks (which is quite odd, because they're really Serbain Muslims). I think you should get rid of your religious leaders and then you'll have a chance to get back together again.

Firstly may I say thank god YU is a piece of history that no one wants to remember. Now all I want to ask and I hope someone will directly answer my question. Why is it that the Serbs want to live in Croatia. What is so special about Croatia that the Serbs would do anything to stay....Croatia has no gold, no oil, no jobs, no gas so what is it, there must be a reason.

Aleks I completely agree with you and what you've said is what I hear all the time from most Serbs educated and born in the diaspora ,like myself.I travel regulary to Bosnia and Serbia and have many non-Serbian friends and they say exactly the same. Problem is it isn't the masses that decide their own fate. The war was imported into ex-YU and that is beyond question. So sadly your Balkan Utopia is unlikely to ever happen as long as the "Great Powers" chose to divide us and that way rule us.

Aleks

I wonder how they would feel if in Serbia they had done this? Then it would be just another reason to threaten them with no EU. Serbia is being pressured with this gay pride parade and how they need to protect minority rights, yet here we have this kind of attack on minority rights and the EU looks the other way. I honestly don't understand the double standards.

I live for the day that progress moves forward in the Balkans. Face it, the Serbs, Croats, and Bosnian Muslims are essentially the same people. They need to get that through their stubborn Balkan heads. As a Serb living in the US, I certainly have more in common with Croats and Bosnian Muslims than not. More in common with them than any other nationality/ethnic group. Same language, same music, same mentality, same partying/celebration/social atmosphere, same food (mostly since obviously muslims don't eat pork, but other than that it's the same)same little nuances and stubborness, but everybody has way too much pride to start to see the light (ironically, another common trait).

Only when all sides finally sit together and admit to everything they did to one another will healing begin and hopefully closer ties too. Serbs have bore the brunt of blame and responsibility, the others bear none and claim to being strict victims. They must start to come clean with their guilt, admit what they have done, what they tried to do, otherwise healing will never begin.

O Canadiana!

pre 10 godina

I can't imagine why people can't just adapt to the language and alphabet of the community they live in? Croatians have every right to take down those ridiculous signs, they are an insult to the Croatian residents those that defended the city!
