The town of Vukovar in Croatia is teeming with police on Tuesday, a day after a group of protesters smashed two plaques placed on public buildings.

and bringing back the checkerboard flag
(njegos, 6 September 2013 01:19)

Checkerboard was used on the Croatian coat-of-arms all through SFRJ. No "brought it back", it was there all the time.

I find it interesting that Croats in Vukovar say that the use of the Cyrillic script brings back reminders of Serb aggression, therefore it should not be allowed. These same people, however, found nothing wrong with the Tudjman regime renaming streets after Croatian WWII war criminals and bringing back the checkerboard flag used by the murderous Ustasha regime who were responsible for butchering hundreds of thousands of Serbs. Don't you think these memories still live in the minds of Serbs? The Croatian double standard at work again.

Shouldn't they be in Vukovar sorting this Shite out.?
(MZ, 4 September 2013 13:00)

In case you didn't notice, the Croatian police are dealing with it. They're arresting the sign-smashers and protecting the new ones with riot police.

Also, it's the Croatian government, in line with Croatian law on minorities that is putting these signs up.

What more do you think they should do?

Now we understand why the Serbs in Krajina tried to break away, to avoid what is presently taking place. Can I add that Serbs and Croats lived in peace until extremist Bosnian Catholics arrived in Slavonija looking for work and bringing their WW11 hatred.

Why is it that the so called educated Serbs on this site are so reluctant to mention the JNA & Chetniks taking down Croatian signs and flags illegally from government buildings in Vukovar November 1991.

As for what you think of "disrespecting" a bunch of ragtag old men you think are "veterans", they're one of the most disenfranchised, marginalized, and ignored social group in Croatia. If you care about their well being so much, wire some money to whatever relative you still have living there with instructions to dispense it to the closest homeless shelter.

Stick to reading and posting to Stormfront. The clientele is more up your alley.

It is not time yet for dual language signs in Vukovar...Wounds are still fresh - consider Serbian president just this year claimed that Vukovar was/is a Serbian town, and that some war crimes in the area have still not been resolved (ex. Croatian victims of rape during the war). Maybe there will be a time in the future for dual language signs but not now. The Constitutional law considers special circumstances and stipulates that in the event of applying the minority rights to bilingualism the government must ensure that such an implementation does NOT cause a disturbance in the relationship of the ethnic minority with the national majority. The Croatian government is acting on the signs today, not for the sake of Serbs, but for its own sake to divert attention from real problems the country faces. Croatian Serb politicians and leaders could be lots to resolve this issue by understanding the sensitivity of the issue for Croatians veterans and the the town's suffering as a whole; if they truly believe in reconciliation and peace.

As an outsider looking in and actually coming to B92 looking for news without the US slant on things I find these types of articles interesting. I always thought Cyrillic is a Slavic language. Does that mean Russians write in Serbian?? No of course not. This is just people trying to be different when they are the same.

Presevo is populated mostly by Albanians, not exactly a population that respects country that lives in be it Serbia, Macedonia...

Even in populated areas that are 90% Serb , there is Cyrillic and Roman represented like here. This was always the case.

That's much more then OSCE rules demand, and those rules on minority rights are here much longer then EU exists. It states that ethnic minority has a right to public use of language if it makes 30% of population.
Now, Croatia is different and never had a culture of tolerance.

In passing, I'll also state that this is also a ridiculous and humorous byproduct of Croatian insistence that Croatian is absolutely and unequivocally a different language from Serbian. This strange Croatian complex that results in subtitles on Serbian films and TV programs shown in Croatia paints them into a corner. If they didn't insist so hard on their language being separate, they might not have to bear the indignity of having to see cyrillic script, which is a direct (and humorous) result of their own linguistic identity insecurity creating the conceptual framework for this to happen.

let's face it - There's not a single Serb living in Vukovar that's going to be confused by latinic script. This has nothing to do with language and understandability. As such, it's not really comparable to Italian in Istria. But hey, what's good for the goose is good for the gander. This is retrograde nationalist bothering retrograde nationalist. Let them :) Since it's within the yolk of the EU now, it'll be a few more smashing signs until they get tired of the dance. Not much danger of it escalating into real violence as the Croatian government is obliged by larger forces to keep those signs up and keep people safe.

Basically, be it Serbian or Croatian or whomever, I love watching idiot nationalists paint themselves into a corner they can't get out of :)

Best bet is probably giving your head a shake and worrying about real problems :)

The Tito loving Croat government will pay dearly for disrespecting the veterans and the people of Vukovar. These champagne sipping socialists continue to create pathetic laws from ZG. These scum bags fled to Germany in 1991 while young men were being massacred by Chetnik irregulars at Ovcare. Serbs in Croatia don't respect the country they live in and the only reason they are their is because Serbia is alot worse. We are the only country on the planet that allows for such crap. omg, riot police to defend an alphabet. Ridiculous. Guess what Vukovar "defenders", you're part of the EU now and your government is bound, not only by its own legislation to uphold the rights of minorities, but by EU legislation. The only think you're accomplishing when you bring that hammer down is causing problems for your own country and your own self as your government is obliged to put them up.

So, go ahead and take resources and attention away from the real problems your country has, but you're truly being idiots
