It maybe a tough task for Serbia to move towards the 21st century but they will get help, financial and otherwise, to achieve its objectives.
The biggest hurdle will be on social and cultural issues.
*Will Belgrade finally have a Gay Parade?
*Will the Roma receive equal rights?
*Will there be uncorrupted justice for all?
(T, 2 July 2013 12:08)

Did any of these condition apply realistically to Croatia?

ida,

I agree and you are absolutely correct ... Tadic and his cronies - supported by countries in the West - are the ones responsible for the shady privatizations that destroyed companies and put employees out of work. And yes, the EU is also full of corruption. But Serbia is now virtually bankrupt and cannot survive without financial assistance. And beginning a process of true democratization is necessary for access to pre-accession funds, and in the long run will be the right path for the country. My hope for Serbia is that Vucic continues with what has begun with Miskovic and Beko, and that everyone responsible for the decade long theft of Serbia ends up in prison where they belong. At least it would be a first step toward justice.

Those of you posting AGAINST EU membership simply do not understand that it's the PROCESS of getting there that will help Serbia the most -- not the ultimate joining!!
-------------

Absolutely!!!

Those who think Serbia can just fix itself don't understand Serbia.

Anna - it's actually the pro-EU government which has pillaged and corrupted Serbia. It was the pro-German Djindjic and Tadic who presided over the massive theft and bad privatization. It was the western installed puppet governments who caused the huge loss of jobs and destruction of Serbian industry.
Many of these industries and companies had survived war and sanctions, plus Serbia, under Milosevic, had signed free-trade agreements with Russia.
But Serbia wasn't able to take advantage of these due to the western-backed coup - and Kostunica was a Trojan Horse to install them (the DOS).

Also many EU agreements have cause loss to Serbia and its economy.

Also in the news is about bribery by Siemens and other Germany companies who bribed Serbs into deals to buy their products and services at much higher cost. So with a few extra million in the pockets of those Germany bribed, Serbian taxpayers were on the hook for hundreds of million more in costs.

EU main countries are full of the corrupt and corruption. Germany was also making corrupt moves in Greece.

"... last year the EU introduced a rule that chapters 23 and 24, related to the rule of law and human rights, are the first to be opened and the last to be closed.

The new method, first applied to Montenegro which was just in the process of starting talks, was introduced because it was noticed that candidate countries, particularly in the Western Balkans, struggle most with these areas, and following the experience with Bulgaria and Romania which, according to a general consensus, entered the EU before they suppressed crime and corruption to a level tolerable to the EU."

Those of you posting AGAINST EU membership simply do not understand that it's the PROCESS of getting there that will help Serbia the most -- not the ultimate joining!! Educate yourself and READ Chapters 23 and 24 before you make comments. You live in a corrupt country with constant human rights violations and NO RULE of LAW ... only politicians and tycoons pillaging what belongs to Serbian citizens. Having to meet the EU requirements contained in these 2 chapters will help Serbian society as a whole, and give you a better life. And the EU is wise enough -- and knows the terrible level of corruption in the Balkans -- to make these the FIRST chapters to be opened.

"The chapters cover practically all aspects of state administration, from tax policy to fishing regulation, from security to culture and education, and each one must be opened and closed by the Foreign Affairs Council of the EU"

Yes, please do something about Serbia's taxes, love how you will now control and regulate fishing throughout Serbia, Serbs don't know how to fish! Serbs don't even know how to protect Serbs in Kosovo so yes ! please teach Serbia how to protect their own people, also I am glad you didn't forget about Serbian culture, I mean Serbs are way to unique they need to be made like everyone else, do something about that ! Glad you'll be getting into the schools too, I figured you would, but it's OK, I trust you !

Serbia should absolutely not join the EU. This is just one more step towards world government. Let me assure all Srbin men and Srpkinja women - the USA is rapidly moving towards a high tech police state. Do not glorify the USA. Fight for freedom, educate yourselves about the current reality of western culture / zapadnjacka kultura. The world needs freedom, like what the USA used to stand for (in general). There was no income tax before 1913.

The other poster is right - farmers will be driven out of their fertile land, people will be moved from villages and smaller cities to population centers for easier control. Prices will go up (what is ECB interest rate .25-.50 bp? that is inflationary!!) N.B. SRB rate is 11%, but everyone wants Euros and Dollars? It's a joke. Pro-EU propaganda will promise more money and a better life. Do not believe the lies. Stay self sufficient, embrace entrepreneurship, help your fellow human being, educate yourself on the disgusting ways that veliki brat is trying to turn this whole world into a prison one country at a time. Good luck Serbia.

What is it actually that Croatia done to satisfy all the points to join EU.
Can someone tell me which of those points are accomplished other than having Germany to do their bidding. Meaning, does not matter what they did or did not do, they joined anyway.

I really don't understand WHY would anybody from the Balkans want to join EU.

Basicly hand over your country so that we can manipulate it as we see fit.We will get rid of the small farmers so that you can import food instead of exporting it.
Forget your on financial system = we just want you to borrow more money and put you in a deeper hole.
Hand over your industry so that foreigners can control and close them eventually.
If you think things are expensive now , just wait.

We are in the business of exploiting , not helping.

Big fish eat small fish.

There are only two countries that benefit = Germany,France and the hell with the rest

Rocky if Serbia is a gorilla being taught to walk a tight rope, albania would be equivalent to an elephant walking that same tight rope. Good luck with that!

Serbia needs 4-9 years. What's more important than EU membership though is that Serbia needs to have a vision, there is a lack of vision among the politicians. EU membership then what? No vision or plan for the country after 10/20 years? No plan to make the country a regional economic power? No plan to develop the tourism industry? No vision to make Serbia better than many EU members? No vision to develop the industry? Nothing???

rocky

Serbia is fully prepared, to meet the challenges that lie ahead!
Boy oh boy, is this going to be fun! I am seriously loving every minute Of this process, it takes time you know, in the training of a gorilla to walk a tightrope!!!
