Maybe, but austerity measures are absolutely necessary right now. The public sector is so bloated with incompetent people who need a paycheck, that it's holding any money that could be used for investments hostage. What's worse, these public sector workers don't even do any real work, so there's no return on their employment.

Something doesn't add up.
On the one hand the headline reads;

"BELGRADE -- The government announced on Wednesday that it will introduce austerity measures in the public sector and REDUCE THE NUMBER OF EMPLOYEES with the administration."

And on the other hand the report goes on to say;

"The Ministry of Education should cut its spending by around RSD 3 billion, and the Ministry of Labor by RSD 3 billion, ALL CUTS RELATING TO MEASURES AIMED AT ENCOURAGING EMPLOYMENT"

This is a contradictory statement which is typical of politicians. Sow the seeds of confusion. It is either that or B92's translator didn't do a good job.

Further..
Cutting spending on education is a false economy and certainly does nothing for future generations.
Also cuts alone, i.e. austerity, have proven to have a negative impact on the economy overall. What is needed is a combination of cuts and investments.
