I couldn't agree more with the points you've raised in your posting.It's really sickening to see the parade of small-minded fascists defending all instances of torture and slaughter of civilians ordered by the US government.The world needs people like Manning and Snowden and they fully deserve the Nobel peace prize.

I think that this only came to light under Obama’s administration by chance not through any planning because activation of sections of the Patriot Act would have been done in incremental stages. Initially they would have been very careful in what they used but as time goes by more and more would be activated until one day all parts are used and it becomes the norm. The US President has little control over these agencies as Snowden said that he could have order Obama’s phone to be tapped – As Leonidas stated the US Presidents are nothing more than “.irrelevant monicans serving their masters who financed their campaigns”.

There is a debate amongst some US academics which has not been well publicized in the US. They are convinced that the Patriot Act was not established to fight terrorism but in essence to control the populace as conditions and standard of living fall further and you get civil unrest. There could well be something to that theory since borrowing has not stopped and the debt is now $17 trillion.

I think Snowden did not trust the US press and for that I don’t blame him as it’s firmly behind the masters who control the President so he went to the next best thing and that is the Guardian. Its not a perfect paper but its one of a few that will still investigate off beat stories.

As they say, freedom requires eternal vigilance.

The Guardian does print a lot of stuff the main press will not, but that does not put a stamp of veracity on the articles. It has printed many stories that are pure shams, I am not familiar with the one you mentioned but so I cannot make a judgment on it.
=================================
But you can make a judgement on this one, can't you?

Bradley, Julian and now Edward, how much more proof does anyone need? These are only the three brave people who decided that enough was enough. How many more know the truth but are too afraid to come forward?

The US prides itself in being the beacon of democracy when in fact they are worse than Soviet Union was. Soviet Union never made themselves look democratic. At least they were not liars while the US is. The US practically controls the world and they are still not happy. Nothing short of complete capitulation of the world will satisfy thier apetite for dominance. Would not be surprised if many of the "terrorist" attacks were actually staged by the CIA in order to take away people's rights and have the people completely happy to do that.
Not only do they wish to control their own citizens, they actually have permission of other governments to spy on them too. Shame on those governments who allow the US to spy on their citizens.

It is ironic that this is coming to light now under the Obama Administration and undoubtably being fueled by the right. This originated with the Patriot Act under the Bush admin and was slipped through easily because of the "need" to control attacks on American soil.
The debate is can you have TOTAL freedom and security at the same time. Of course wiretapping was not a concept envisioned by the writers of the constitution. Of course in reality there is nothing new in the procedure it has been done for years and years before, however, it could only be used for information purposes only now it can be use in prosecutions.

U.S. President Barack Obama confirmed the veracity of the information, but defended such policy with "the fight against terrorism," adding that there was "judicial and congressional control" over the program, which he said served to protect U.S. citizens from potential attacks.

All US presidents after Kennedy have been irrelevant monicans serving their masters who financed their campaigns to get them elected and Barak Hussein is not an exemption.Let's not forget that this president is the one who promised transparency and accountability,empty concepts from an empty man.George Orwell was right.

A relative completed her Masters degree in law about 6 years ago and she looked into the then new US laws on terrorism and on completion she was horrified. As part of her research she contacted a few highly respected US law academics on this issue and they all expressed great fear that the US was turning into a dictatorship if their government was not careful.
Snowden could not trust the US free press with the story for fear of it being stifled so he went to the Guardian.
Well comrades, welcome to the new United States of Socialist Republics.
