You have made valid points. The route from Belgrade to Thessaloniki will be difficult and expensive to build, but it might be more popular than you think. The river route from Belgrade to Greece will be 1200km shorter going through the Morava than through the Danube to the Black Sea. With fuel costs going up and environmental concerns increasing, river transport will replace road and rail transport whenever possible. This new route will be used mostly for German imports/exports. If Germany agrees, then it might be built, if not, then it will remain a pipe dream.

what a boost for Serbia, Macedonia and Greece. Congratulations! This project will link these three countries to a greater exctent then today and it will provide jobs for thousands of people for many years to come. It will give Serbia and Macedonia transport access to the sea which will simplify export/import of goods. Anyone who doesn't think this project is benificial for these countries is just jealous and an enemy of these three great nations.

Haven't the Chinese done enough with ruining their own rivers and environment? I welcome Chinese investments, but this is just ridiculous, and like another poster said, where would you get the water and how would it effect current river flows? Questions like those are ignored by Chinese bureaucrats, they forcibly move their own populations away from river regions, why should we expect them to care about impact around rivers on the other side of the planet? I didn't realize there was huge impact on the roads, north to south, to the degree that now rivers would need to help with? China is having a bubble with building ghost towns, shopping malls that are empty, just to build. And now they want Balkans to throw the little money they have on this insane project?

Improve the roads, and RAILWAYS, for God's sake!

I hope they realize that for every part of the canal (locks, canal, harbors, etc) and in every stage (preparation, construction, transport, use, etc) they need to perform an environmental impact assessment and that will be a big undertaking which can be fought all the way up to the EU courts? And how will they fill the canal? With water from Danube which is summer is often so low that the hydropower plants at Djerdap cannot produce enough energy?
A canal such as this will take decades to build. And to what aim? There is hardly any transport at this moment via Danube with Romania and hardly any trade with Macedonia and Greece via road. They expect that when you build a canal business will come?
The Chinese will tell you it is feasible to take money from your pocket. Others will also earn good money from Serbian taxpayers' money.

This could be a route for Qatari LNG to Germany and Austria and therefore might get backing from the EU.

I don't like the EU, but if it'll finance this new trade route then that would be good for the region.

"The project documentation is nearing completion. That is what the head of Srbijagas (Serbia's public natural gas company) has told me. During the meetings in Moscow, we agreed that Gazprom would fund the realization of the whole project in Serbia, and Serbia would return its share from the transit tax. So we will not have any expenses during the construction of the pipeline, and we will employ almost all of our construction resources," Bačević explained. Poor Serbia lousy in making any business deals without being a total ripoff for it.
