the truth -
"Subject" and "object" are grammatical terms - the subject of a verb is in the nominative case, the object in the accusative (which, to be honest, may be difficult to differentiate in English). The difference has nothing to do with "animateness" - so you can say "The baseball (subject, nom., inanimate) struck the batter (object, acc., animate).
