We all knew it would come to this when we get to the finalization of negotiations, and the Government signing the "treaty" will be considered a "traitor" for ever and ever. Mr. Vucic speaks reasonably, he is determined to act in the direction of "reinventing" Serbia's image in the global context, but, at the same time, keep, at least, some elements of sovereignty. It's great how opposition parties have suddenly become experts in Kosovo issue...why didn't they take care of it?

"Continue with the negotiations which do not include recognizing Kosovo as an independent country, but as a part of Serbia" Sandy Nice pipe dream. I don't think Ashton will be ready for such "make believe" negotiations very soon. You can't fool people many times.

Now I know why people voted for Progressives. They want to save our country and our dignity, but at the same time they are willing to continue with further negotiations in order to reach an acceptable agreement. The ball is now in EU court and I hope that this time they will perform fair play.

Sandy

pre 11 godina

I did not expect anything else, because Vucic promised the Serbian people that he will act in their best interest. Right now the best is to refuse that shameful offer, and to try to continue with the negotiations which do not include recognizing Kosovo as an independent country, but only as a part of Serbia.

The Serbs should get the same rights that the Albanians had in 1998. There is fairness in that solution, as well as a linear one.
(Lola, 8 April 2013 16:50)

The Serbs should all have the right to live freely in their own country, which is now infected with all those malicious people who deny the fact that Kosovo was, is and always be part of Serbia.

@James: "Since UN 1244 governs the subject of Serbian Province of Kosovo, its status must be determined in the UN."

The status was determined in the UN, and the result was the Ahtisaari plan. Kosova accepted it and Serbia did not. When Serbia wanted to get into EU, EU referred it back to Ahtisaari. Things are as simple and clear as that. There's no ultimatums or humiliation here. It is Serbia who wants to access 1.5 billion of EU's money annually, not the other way around.
Also, you must surely know that by 1244 there's should not be any Serbian institutions in Kosova, period.
So, you want both EU's money and to change 1244 in your favor. And you feel humiliated if your pipe dreams don't come to fruition?

Now Serbia isnt even wanting any power in Kosovo it just wants Serbs to have power and all western powers and Kosovo are saying no which means Serbia in a corner as if Serbs have no power they will look to Belgrade

It is very obvious that the EU is humiliating Serbia by giving ultimatums. Since UN 1244 governs the subject of Serbian Province of Kosovo, its status must be determined in the UN. Kosovo isnt a member of anything and doesnt have a say in the matter.

Ok, everybody take a deep breath, enjoy the spring, go to the beach when it warms up a little more, and come back in a couple of years, when things are clearer. As for the U.S. taking over responsibility for negotiations, I don't see it, myself. Talks only work when both sides want a deal more than the existing status, and that obviously isn't the case here.

Serbia should remember what happened when they refused NATO'S offer at Rambouilett and Ahtisari's offer a few years ago, bad things happened to Serbia. The choice is yours Serbia. You agreed to EU mediation, thinking you could stall if negotiations didn't go your way, however, the world does not revolve around Serbia. Time to pay the piper.

You just did for at least a couple of years and the next move could be Serbia out of Schengen area as well.
Negotiations in the future? Who knows?
Conclusion is that Serbia lost time again for something they knows that is lost forever. (words of Nikolic, Dacic and Vucic)
this is not the first time Serbia is shooting on her feet and it doesn't seam to be the last and neither fault of the government or the people.

Acceptance of ultimatum, No!

So lets remember that negotiations are a dialogue and not a monologue where both parties make compromises to reach a fair deal.

The EU has failed once again. That word "failure" and EU are being heard together more and more these days. Must mean that Germany is at the helm. Also, just like in Bosnia, the US will sabotage any agreeable deal coming from Europe.

So what is next? Will the US now save the day by organising another Dayton? It has been taken away from the UN, EU so the last option now is the US, where I suspect they will offer an acceptable solution. Goes with the ego.

Because the next offer will be worse than current one.
Remember from 1999 until now the offer has changed drastically.

1999.Kosovo autonomus region of Serbia with serbian army only in serbian populated areas and NATO in Albanian areas.

2003. Partition of North and Serbia recognises the ramain part Kosovo as independent.

2008 Ahtisari Plan.Kosvo become UN member in echange for extra rights for serbian comunity in Kosovo.

2013 Ashton plan.Accociation of serbian town halls to have powers but not like another RS or Cyprus.

2013....Strom 2.0?
Who knows, but all we know that will be worse than before.

Serbs on the other end still believe in the fairtale, that Kosovo is within Serbia and they can run things there, like in before 1999.

Now its time to show the EU Serbia means business - implement the reforms that are in Serbia's interest as required as if Serbia was a candidate member. This will show EU members Serbia is serious about EU membership but not at a humilating cost and at same time will allow economic progression making. Serbia less relient on EU membership unless it is on the best terms for Serbia

In the meantime Serbia must forwarn the west that violence will not be initiated by Serbia and as sovereign UN recognised state it has the right to ensure the protection of all its citizens and across the whole of its territory including its UN recognised province.

Serbia genuinely wishes to agree to a mutual solution and if EU is incapable of supporting this any further then EU should admit it lacks the competance to move these foward and suggest a way for a true solution be found..

I agree with Ari. Too much time has been wasted with the Germans and the EU. At the UN the spotlight will be on the Albanians dismal record on human rights, solving of ethnically motivated crimes and the restoration of property of those ethnically cleansed at the end of the war and in the pograms of 2004. Issues which the Germans have chosen to ignore.

At the UN it will be Thaci facing pressure to clean up, and hopefully prison for war crimes-the most grotesque of which being the organ trading horrors.

The only just solution is a special status for Kosovo, where Albanians and Serbs are free to control their own affairs, and have Albanian and Serbian passports, eventually time and education is the only hope for bringing communities together. The best way to build Serbia's future is to close any opened circles, without any heorism, without any strong action, but also without humiliation. Road to success should be built by high diplomacy, we must put negotiations on their native position under cover of UN, without any blackmails from EU. That kind of politics "all or nothing" would be killer to Serbia, especially when there is non paper offer on table.

Ari Gold

should be conducted under the auspices of the UN, Vučić said this "would be nice" but that he was "not sure if it was realistic."

Incorrect. The status of Kosovo i Metohija is in fact still an issue at the UN and it was Serbia that agreed to transfer negotiations to Brussels. Serbia as a UN member can request to re-activate talks at the UN level. Russia & China as Security Council countries have the influence to easily make this happen, easily.

The cards are and always have been there for Serbia. Serbs have to release themselves from these EUro chains which bind Serbia to admitted some kind of collective guilt over the wars in the 1990's.

Mr. Vucic, just to refresh your memory, the UN Security Council authorized talks already occurred in 2006/2007 in Vienna. The Ahtisaari proposal was the conclusion of those talks, leading to the declaration of independence, mostly thanks to Serbia's arrogance and refusal to budge.

What you're asking for would mean that Kosova would have to give up the Ahtisaari Plan, and the recognition from over 50% of the UN members based on that plan.

Nice try!

These talks are talks of two countries, just like most of the EU members see them.

However, once Kosova becomes a member of the UN, then you can talk under UN auspices about war damages, 50% of Kosovo's livestock stolen and taken to Serbia in June 1999, all the factory equipment taken to Serbia, 80% of household appliances and goods taken to Serbia in 1999, all the destroyed buildings, and above all, about bodies of about 2000 Albanians that are still buried somewhere in Serbia.

Now I know why people voted for Progressives. They want to save our country and our dignity, but at the same time they are willing to continue with further negotiations in order to reach an acceptable agreement. The ball is now in EU court and I hope that this time they will perform fair play.

Hey fluid ! please show something to substantiate your claims please!Like drone or satellite pictures or people pictures of thousands of cows leaving Kosovo,on trains ? trucks? or headed by Serb cow-boys ? how did that happened? and the pigs too ? appliances? wow,it takes a truck to move a family so trucks where needed for that as well...definitely seems like Serbia has so many trucks, tens of thousands !!!you mean like stove and microwaves and fridges and all? and what happened to that it was stored in giant warehouses build for the purpose ? or was it sold ? or distributed for free or is it still rotting somewhere ? the buildings? and the KLA was not an illegal armed rebellion? and they never destroyed anything?nor where the NATO bombs falling on buildings ? so according to you Serbia destroyed and robbed it's own land and now it must payback something to the thiefs who claim to be the "new owner" ? this must be some kind of intricate sick way of thinking that most of us cannot even start to understand.

Brilliant. Bye Bye German ultimatums through its puppet the EU, and off to the UN for Russian and Chinese support and UN resolutions. Jeremic will make a good host. Right now he is busy tidying the UN house; he's made some poopy seed cakes and is waiting for everyone to arrive for a chat. Best news I have heard in ages. Welcome home. Come on in. And close the door.

Ari Gold

should be conducted under the auspices of the UN, Vučić said this "would be nice" but that he was "not sure if it was realistic."

Fluid

pre 11 godina

Will you seek compensations and reparations from NATO, too? NATO bombing caused huge material damages in the war. And about deaths of civilians caused by NATO, you'll demand compensations from that? What about the 30,000 rounds of depleted uranium munitions that NATO fired in Kosovo, and leukemia cases this has resulted? Will you demand any compensations from NATO?

(EA, 8 April 2013 13:47)

Why do u keep comparing kosovo serbs conditions with Presevo albanians?Presevo has never ever been albanian territory and kosovo is serbian, thats a big difference and remember that serbs are a majority in Bujanovac aswell as Medvedja and in Presevo its 50/50, what exactly is it that you dont understand?Last but not least dont u remember that EU and US said that the Presevo valley is an internal serbian matter?

No side can win at the expense of the other, this will only bring another conflict in the future.

Special status, more autonomy and joint police but remaining Serbia's province. We can't let the squatters take our land for nothing. Too many victims. They can't say what is 'unacceptable' when they only formed 'Kosova' in 2008 lol

Good!

Stupidity is a blessing!

Chupakabra

pre 11 godina

When all things come together, only way out for Serbia is to be guided by strong lidership who knows its positions in the world an who is willing to build new quality friendships through future. Also if there is a good will for a peceful solution on Albanian side, they must stop with statements like Taci's.Such statements only bring harm to both sides and through that kind of behavior he shows the real face and intentions of Albanian side. I must say that im afraid of their future acts on northern part of KIM where is Serbian majority.

More negotiations, Yes!

The Count of Kosova

pre 11 godina

The negotiations have ended. I don't see how Serbia can insist they continue. Ashton awaits Serbia's answer tomorrow. It's as simple as that.

NATO came to aid. Any wrongdoing on their part is forgiven. However, Serbia will have to face consequences for what she did.

The Serbs should get the same rights that the Albanians had in 1998. There is fairness in that solution, as well as a linear one.

I did not expect anything else, because Vucic promised the Serbian people that he will act in their best interest. It is very obvious that the EU is humiliating Serbia by giving ultimatums. Since UN 1244 governs the subject of Serbian Province of Kosovo, its status must be determined in the UN. Kosovo isnt a member of anything and doesnt have a say in the matter.

Although on a serious note in reality EU&Kosova/o cannot accept anything that comes from Serbia's cooking factory like unilateraly constitution of Serbia and the late platform, until then nobody is going to take Serbia seriously or hear what she has to say wich is a key to Serbia's internal/external problems.

The "culpa" as during the wars seams to be of both without excluding the patriarchate.

pre 11 godina

Ok, everybody take a deep breath, enjoy the spring, go to the beach when it warms up a little more, and come back in a couple of years, when things are clearer. As for the U.S. taking over responsibility for negotiations, I don't see it, myself. Talks only work when both sides want a deal more than the existing status, and that obviously isn't the case here.
