When the Serbs in Kosovo held a referendum, the Brits said it "wasn't helpful" but when the Brits held a referendum in the Maldives, then that referendum is the toast of London and talking point number 1. It seems some people are more equal than others.
(marKo, 16 March 2013 17:44)

Brits have never held a referendum in the Maldives and I don't think Westminster would care if the Maldives did have a referendum, they can do what they want. The Maldives ceased to be a British protectorate in 1965 and they're now an independent country.

Never stopped Britain supporting fascist Tudjman and his statements even to this day. By the way how are the Chagossians going? It becomes very different when it's closer to home innit Ian.

you are talking out of you backside as usual, there was no "ETHNIC" cleansing of the Faulklands by the British because there were no inhabitants on the Faulklands when the Brits settled it. It seems that you make things up as you go along. The Spanish however when they invaded South America did all the ethnic cleansing of the Indians including those in today's Argentina, Where did you get your education pal? ah yes, school Croatia the experts in ethnic cleansing and friends of the fascists in Argentina. I hope the Argies do try it on again and they'll end up with the same result as last time, a good hammering.

Argentina needs to attack again. GB is not strong enough now to take it. The 80s are gone and dead. Long live Argentina.
(Daniel, 15 March 2013 23:10)

If they attack again, we'll blow them out of the water again like last when the fascist regime invaded. We have a far superior and technologically advanced Navy in comparison to Argentina. Argentina doesn't want to be embarrassed like it was last time. Also we're much better prepared than we were in the 80s. Argentina should be thankful we beat them last time as it toppled the fascist military regime in Argentina.

I'm not surprised by such fascist comments from Francis I, he had close ties with the fascist regime in the 1980s and he is now the leader of a religion which historically had very close links with fascist powers.

This referendum proves that even the Argentinians who live on the Falklands want to remain British.

Long live the Falkland Islands!

I never understood on what grounds does Argentina claim the Faulklands? There was never Argentinian population there! When the Britons sattled it almost two centuries ago they foun no indeginous people on the islands. The accusations that they were intruders sounds very phoney from the mouths of the descendents of the Spanish and Italian emigrants who wiped out the Indians in what is now Argentina.

Clearly the pope doesn't respect the rights of a people to self-determination. I suspect that God is furious at this kind of position being taken by someone claiming (clearly falsely) to speak in His name.

And just when did they do that? There were a few colonists living there whom the British invited to stay. Conditions had been so bad for the brief time the colonists had been in the islands (violence, lack of payment for work from the organizer of the colony) that most of them chose to leave. The British living there now go back 8 or 9 generations.

If the Pope is impressed by the Argentinians' claim to the islands, it may be because (besides his Argentinian citizenship), it was a Pope who gave it to Spain when he divided the non-European world between Portugal and Spain. Argentinians today may refer to this as "the international law of the day," but nobody else does. The Aztecs and the Japanese certainly didn't when the Bull was issued, nor the English.

Do you know what colonisation is right now? That precious "United States of Europe" of yours. European countries being occupied by an unelected bunch in Brussels that want to turn Europe into a Sovjet style republic. We all know how the Sovjet Union ended.
Please spare me the 'oh look what these evil Brits did to the Falklands/Malvinas'. Do you know what the real genocide is in Latin America? The indigenous people of that continent who were masacred by the millions by the people who now call themselves Argentines. The officers of the army that invaded the islands in 1982 were mostly Mestizo, the conscripts were mostly indigenous.
Kirchner only put the matter of the islands on the agenda to lure attention away from the fact that her country thanks to her policy is on the verge of collapse.
If you love your "united states of Europe" then you should support the Brits in this matter.
