Nobody is trying to say Serbia is the most healthy nation in Europe but you cannot link the high mortality rate solely to smoking, if you do and ignore the bombings as a factor then you are massievely mistaken and misguided, as usual.
(SCP UK, 14 March 2013 16:12)
My guess the article was wasted on you. Even if what you say is remotely a factor the thing is that is in the past and there is no changing it. People's life styles of smoking eating and drinking is a changeable factor that influences life expectancy. However, if you wish to sit in a smoke filled bar and blame the west for your failing health, ok.

Keep something in mind though, with 40% of Serbs not even living in the Balkans, there are still more Serbs in the region than Albanians and Croatians.....combined!
(Ari Gold, 14 March 2013 18:55)

And you still
-lost 4 wars
-lost Kosovo
-Lost Montenegro
-Lost Krajina
-Lost your reputation....

so what exactly is your point?

Smoking, however bad it is or isn't, and that's debatable given the rise of corporate driven junk science, is, I suspect, often used as a smokescreen (pun intended) for other far more serious factors that Western governments want to hide for fear of legal action against them.

For example, the thousands of atmospheric nuclear tests since 1945 that have saturated the planet with radiation that won't die out for centuries; declining nutrition in food; air pollution; toxic medicinal vaccines and drugs and, above all, the kind of negative stress that always follows the Western lifestyle as it spreads - all of these things add up to declining health, and not just alcohol and nicotine which are nothing in terms of real danger compared to them.
(TP, 14 March 2013 17:33)

TP,

So, you doubt smoking is bad for your health. The National Institute of Health proved long ago that smoking can cause cancer. Junk science questions the N.I.H. results. Perhaps smoking is also detrimental to your reading comprehension!

Mr. T,

I think you meant "only the dumb die young".

Not surprised really. I have to admit that Serbs do love their cigarettes and think it is completely normal to smoke wherever they like, even in a house full of non-smokers.

It is the one place where a waiter will advise not to give your kids a cold drink, as it's not good for them, while replacing the ashtray on the table next to you in a smoke filled restaurant.

In the US we say that two things are certain:
1. death
2. taxes

In Serbia, we could add a third which is Serbs will ALWAYS blame others for their misfortune.

We're sorry Serbia, do you need a hug?

What a sick and disgusting thing to say. Only primitive Hoxha educated hyenas could say something that stupid.

Danilo, until fast food came along, the countries in the world with the highest smoking rates, such as France and Japan, also had some of the highest longevity rates, too.

I cant be sure about your neighbour, but while there are indeed a high level of smokers in Serbia you cannot ignore or underestimate the effect the bombings had on people's health. After the bombings there was a significant rise in cancer cases and this is not by coincidence, depleted uranium for obvious reasons is extremely unhealthy, but also power stations which were bombed are hugely likely to have released all kinds of poisonous toxins into the air, these toxins are breathed in or they may indeed be spread over agriculture for harvesting. Do you deny this as even a possibility? Nobody is trying to say Serbia is the most healthy nation in Europe but you cannot link the high mortality rate solely to smoking, if you do and ignore the bombings as a factor then you are massievely mistaken and misguided, as usual.

Lie, Damn Lies, and Statistics

pre 11 godina

With over a decades worth of sanctions, bombing and use of depleted uranium, is this any surprise? The West regularly blocked basic elements needed for health such as chlorine under their specious interpretation of 'dual use' materials, i.e. they could theoretically be used for military as well as civilian purposes. Western sanctions on Iraq, where water infrastructure was also targeted for bombing lead to the death and illness of over 500,000 iraqi children, something Madeliene Albright has said on record was "worth it" (it's there on Youtube). How is Serbia supposed to have 'european standard' mortality rates when it has been starved of the basics and funding for so long? 'Smart sanctions' are supposed to be the answer, but the fact they exist proves that previous sanctions regimes were indiscriminate hurt the general population as a whole.

"lies" post reminds me of a conversation with my neighbour in Belgrade.

I'll never forget her telling me, with a straight face, that depleted uranium caused her cancer as she butted out her cigarette. Nevermind that there was no DU used around Belgrade, it seems like the obvious thing to blame as she reaches for another cigarette.

With such tensions, cheap cigarettes and alcohol keep the populace quiet. If they were taxed higher to keep them out of reach, the government would have to actually make progress. Better to let the country stagnate under corruption and allow the populace to slowly kill themselves.
