Milorad Veljović will continue in his role as police director, the Serbian government has decided on Thursday, B92 has learned.

The fact is that Veljovic was the only professional law enforcement administrator among the candidates. The rest who showed interest were mostly party hacks and bureaucrats, with the exception of Markovic, a career intelligence official. The last thing you want in a democratic society is an intelligence official being the domestinc director of law enforcement. That harkens back to a secret police mentality and further blurs the line between domestic law enforcement and foreign intelligence. Veljovic is a solid choice.
