I'd like to see the next Pope come from Africa or Latin America.

It is unprecendented for an individual of such stature to give up post.
One must be very principled and humble to relinquish such power.

Tell me beki, where have you seen another example of such humility and doing the right thing?

He seem to have some backbone tough. The news in recent time weren't good (sex scandals, corruption scandals, loss of respect, etc.). His age / health is indeed an issue and he wasn't very popular because of his brief membership in Hitlerjugend at young age and very conservative views. Ultimately he probably listened to his conscience. But it's not surprising because he said precisely just that. It is indeed a very rare step from a person who has such a great power.

If I actually cared, I would agree with Ian below that the next one should come from an area where they still believe in God and where the most Catholics are. I believe they passed up some good non-Hitler's Youth candidates and chose Ratzinger because they are scared of a man of color sitting in the Vatican.

Roman or whatever, this Pope has not improved the image of the catholic church, one that is riddle with claims of pedophilia, denial, and cover up. IMHO, a German Pope was a bad choice from the get-go. The church needs a minority Pope, maybe someone from Latin America, where standards and morals are still a lot more strict. I support the Catholic church, but I do not support Popes that cover up the "evil" of their church.

How do you know he did it because of humility?
I don't pretend to know his real reasons (he can say anything for public consumption) but then neither do you.
Whatever his reasons are he will feature more prominently in history than the other popes because of how he abdicated instead of died in the job.
All the popes before him got old and found it difficult to stay in the job till the end so it would seem there is another reason he resigned.

Maybe we'll find out one day.
