In time the same will be for Serbs in Montenegro.
(LtCol Friedmann, 8 February 2013 00:06)

You would like to believe that, wouldn't you? What you don't understand is that the vast majority of Montenegrin still call themselves Serbs, because it is what they are and they are proud of it. Montenegro is just a region in Serbia; the existence of Montenegrin as it's own language is as ridiculous as the existence of the "Bosnian" language. See, the thing is, every single Montenegrin I have ever spoken to declares himself a Serb. Did you really just compare the colonisation of America to Montenegro's independance? Hahahah, a more suitable comparison would be the succession of Manchester in England and the formation of the "Manchesterovian" language, along with the "Manchesterian" national identity.

LtCol Friedmann

"Montenegro is not a separate country; if all of my forefathers called themselves Serbs, who I am to call myself any different?" (Luka)

Luka, were you hiding under a rock for the last number of years? Too late, it's done they're independent. At some stage during the American independence movement from the British, Americans of English background had a problem with the movement as they wanted to remain as loyal British subjects. 230 or so years forward & even though there are Americans who know thay're of English or Scottish descent, they're happy to call themselves Americans. In time the same will be for Serbs in Montenegro.

The language is called Serbo-Croatian! Even before that it was called either Serbian or Croatian. I am a Muslim from Bosnia and I do not see a problem with calling the language I speak "Serbo-Croatian." That's what my parents raised me to call it and thats what I will always call it. Go back to school and get an education and learn the history of our language. Bosnian and Montenegrin are NOT languages.

Bekim_Novi Sad

As we all know, Serbian, Croatian, Montenegrin & Bosnian's basically the same language with different dialects. And of course, there are many variations within each proclaimed national language. Why can't we just continue to call it Serbo-Croation?
(Fikret, 6 February 2013 17:32)

Nail on the head. I can understand 100% when dealing with clients from Croatia, Bosnia and Montenegro not to mention Croats, Bosnians and Montenegrins here in Serbia. There is one language and its called Serbo-Croat, end of. Not Serbian, Croatian, Bosnian or Montenegrin. There is no difference. This is ridicolous and this nonsense is designed to divide us all. Not surprised in the slightest that the whole thing has been a fiasco in Podgorica. I have been saying this for years.

Now that I have been vindicated, I am off to have an argument over lunch with a Slovene workmate. Ha!

Scots, Irish, Welsh they all speak English. But they are not English.

So what is the point of this article???
(ben, 7 February 2013 10:59)

Yes but they have their own distinct languages Ben. Scots Gallic, Irish Gaelic and Welsh. Scots Gallic and Irish Gaelic are mutually understood as they come from the Godellic tree of the Celtic languages. However Welsh is not since its Brythonic. They are the same people, Celts. However when a Scotsman, Irishman and Welshman speak English, they are speaking the same language albeit with minor dialectic difference. Its the same with a Serb, Croat and Bosnian when they talk to each other..... in Serbo-Croat, i.e. common language and who are from the same people. I see no difference. The only way I can tell a Serb or a Croat from appearance is by what football shirt they wear. :-D

My two cents.

This language fiasco has more to with how you perceive yourself, than with what you speak. If tension exists between people or there is recent memory of conflict, you won't want to be associated with that particular ethnic group. The various English speaking peoples around the world have no such recent history of conflict. There are other factors at play here; petty Balkan tribalism, insecurity, myths. The Montenegrins are highland Serbs essentially. But after the creation of the Kingdom of Serbs Croats and Slovenes in 1918 Montenegrin separatists loyal to king Nicola were persecuted and there is residual resentment at perceived Serb heavy handedness. That said, we all know that Serbo-croat is the same language. And we all know that Serbs and Montenegrins are brothers. The separation of Montenegro from Serbia should never have happened. It was manufactured by the United States and her puppets to weaken Serbia. That is obvious.

Luka

pre 11 godina

Being Montenegrin myself, I find this whole independence fiasco amusing. Montenegro is not a separate country; if all of my forefathers called themselves Serbs, who I am to call myself any different? And Montenegrin as a language? Hahahah, you speak Serbian for God's sake! The only reason Montenegro got independence is credited only to the Croats, Bosniaks and Albanians who make up 20% of the population and want nothing more than to see a weaker Serbia.

What amazes me is that someone from Australia, UK, America and Canada speak English and they have been separate countries forever but someone from the former Yugoslavia has to have a separate language recognized by the international community just because of a difference in dialect.
Australian English is different to American English etc but that's no reason to call it Australian or American.
How ridiculous are the people of former Yugoslavia?
It's especially more ridiculous when a Montenegrin says he speaks Montenegrin.
A Croat from Bosnia will never say he speaks Bosnian. He will always speak Croatian. Maybe we should just rename all those languages to something we all have in common like a Balkan langauge.

"Montenegrin language "fails to take root"

Probably because it is a dialect not a language.

I'm sorry but Bosnian, Croatian, Montenegrin and Serbian are not their own languages. They are all the same language. Find a common name for that language which is acceptable to all four parties and move on from this silliness.

If I got a Bosniak, Croat, Montenegrin and a Serb together in one room and told them to speak their own language, all four would be able to communicate with one another.

However if I got a Glaswegian and a Nigerian together in one room and told them both to speak English, they would not be able understand one another even though they'd be speaking the same language.

So how can 4 people who supposedly speak a different language each be able to understand one another, yet 2 people who speak the same language not understand one another?

This matter is entirely a bad seed planted by the West, in an effort to further separate the peoples of the Balkans. It was a benefit for them (US/EU) to have small independent nations in the Balkans, than one large one that could be an economic, and or military threat. Unfortunately, some politicians/nationalists took the matter to the next step of ridiculous. Kind of like, heck no, I speak Southern USA English, it's a different language than that Northern one. All I know is, I am a Montenegrin, my family history is in Herzegovina, Serbia, and Montenegro - and I speak Serbian. Put it all into a pot, stir it, and I am Serbian.

(Fikret, 6 February 2013 17:32)

It's not politically correct. The official term is BCS, Bosnian Croatian Serbian if you want to apply for jobs in Brussels. For the translation/interpreter service* in the EC, it is even more ridiculous, sometimes using the same person for a 'different' language. The west supports the balkanisation of languages apart from when it has to pay for it...

It should and it will. But the only thing I would add to that is Montenegro should join Serbia as in actually become apart of the Serbian Republic and not a combined nation of "Serbia & Montenegro" it simply doesn't make sense to compare 7 million with 650,000 people. Montenegrins are some of the most proudest Serbs and only because of a fraudulent referendum with Albanians from Kosovo i Metohija allowed to vote (but not Montenegrins living in Serbia) was the split allowed to happen.

Montenegro is key because it shares a border with our southern province and this will surely be a game changer upon Montenegro's eventual integration into the Serbian state.

Because we are just so very clever.
Now I can brag that I speak so many languages. I can even put then on my resume and so many idiots will be none the wiser.

That's what the Yanks, Brits and the rest of the idiots have approved. Everyone got to introduce their own language as legit.

One thing I would like to ask the "Montenegrins" is what language did their own so loved and always mentioned Njegos speak?
I am sure they study his works.

I dunno, Fikret. Maybe something a little more reflective of the current situation and unbiased to any particular group.

maybe something like: That shared language of the once-united, now independent peoples of that place we don't want to name in case of offending anyone.

Danilo

To add more ridiculousness to your illustration, Ian, take two Croats, one from Zagreb and the other from some small Dalmatian island. They can both be said to be speaking "Croatian", yet not have a clue what the other is saying. Yet, someone from Belgrade and Zagreb would have no such problems, yet they are speaking different languages?

Luka

pre 11 godina

Being Montenegrin myself, I find this whole independence fiasco amusing. Montenegro is not a separate country; if all of my forefathers called themselves Serbs, who I am to call myself any different? And Montenegrin as a language? Hahahah, you speak Serbian for God's sake! The only reason Montenegro got independence is credited only to the Croats, Bosniaks and Albanians who make up 20% of the population and want nothing more than to see a weaker Serbia.

Why can't we just continue to call it Serbo-Croation?
(Fikret, 6 February 2013 17:32)

Indeed! Or "South Slavic" or something? Makes it a lot easier than the ridiculously politically correct "Serbo-Croato-Bosanski-Montenegrin" language. Or is it "Bosno-Croato-Montenegrian-Serbian"?

(Fikret, 6 February 2013 17:32)

It's not politically correct. The official term is BCS, Bosnian Croatian Serbian if you want to apply for jobs in Brussels. For the translation/interpreter service* in the EC, it is even more ridiculous, sometimes using the same person for a 'different' language. The west supports the balkanisation of languages apart from when it has to pay for it...

Fikret

As we all know, Serbian, Croatian, Montenegrin & Bosnian's basically the same language with different dialects. And of course, there are many variations within each proclaimed national language. Why can't we just continue to call it Serbo-Croation?

Luka
