Well then you have nothing to worry about. But he has more power than just kissing babies and opening bridges.

I agree he does have a little more power than the current reigning Miss Czech Republic!

So many here will say that the president has no real power. So what?
People have voted for him knowing what he thinks and so obviously they agree. This tells me that there are votes out there to be taken if you take the same stance as the president.
How long before the other politicians notice this? How long before diplomatic relations are broken?

Peggy

pre 11 godina

Ian, nobody has to de-recognise anyone. All they have to do is recall their ambassadors from Pristina or don't send any at all and "Kovos" is a charity case forever.
No trade means it's dead.
Break diplomatic ties and what are your brethren left with?

It is funny that people think that the Czech Republic will 'de-recognise' Kosovo now that Zeman is Czech President. It is not even constitutionally possible for starters. Do you think the US should 'de-recognise' Iran because Obama is opposed to Iran's Government? Zeman is the President aka Head of State which means he has sweet FA power, especially in Foreign Affairs. If Prince Charles came out as Anti-Kosovo, do you think the UK would 'de-recognise' Kosovo when Chales becomes King aka head of state? All Zeman can do is refuse to accept the credentials of a Kosovan ambassador and refuse to sign the credentials of a Czech ambassador to Kosovo. So nothing has changed from Klaus who preceded Zeman except that Zeman is very pro-EU. The 'de-recognition' of Kosovo by the Czech Repulic is not constitutionally possible, even if everyone in the Czech Government and Parliament came out as anti-Kosovo they still recognise Kosovo. They'd have to find a legal loophole which didn't make didn't the original recognition legal as with STP. But the Czech Republic's recognition was done via the legitimate channels and Presidential consent isn't required unlike in STP.

sj,
It is nice to hear you say that. It is nice that you think he has that power and what does B92 have to say?
"The new president will represent the Czech Republic abroad and appoint candidates to the constitutional court and the central bank, but does not carry much day-to-day power"
I think his statements carry as much weight as yours does.

Which isn't much different from the USA, neither, where Obama was defamed by right-wing extremists as 'being Muslim', 'not being born in the USA' or similar nonsense

Well I just both heard and watched him say that exact statement in front of a very large crowd right after his win. He called the Albanians terrorists and criminals and that his country will withdraw any cognition of Kosovo.
Maybe in 1999 there was no chance but today with the west so indebted that they think wars are going to get their economies started, everything is possible.
The new President also knocked back any thoughts of allowing the Germans who were kicked out after WW2 being allowed to return to the Czech Republic.

"I would withdraw even the charge d'affaires that is there now, let alone send an ambassador. I consider Kosovo a terrorist regime financed by narco-mafias," Belgrade-based daily Danas is quoting Zeman as saying. Hmmm, wonder how Berlin will react to this statement, as it does not go with their plans for the Balkans. In any case, it is refreshing to see that there are individuals that see the truth, stand tall in their beliefs, and not simply fall in line to pacify their EU masters - even if they are supposed equal partners. Ziveli, Mr. Zeman, and a long and prosperous Czech presidency.

Too bad that the sole task he's entitled to is...putting medals on jackets...LOL just like his predecessor...

"Zeman won because of his promotion and stance of social welfare programs that many people in the Czech Republic depend upon because of the lack of jobs and its easier to leech off the government than to work a job and earn a living. "
(Karl, 26 January 2013 20:16)

But unlike Obama, he played with the nationalist card and justified killings and expulsion of the German population after WW2. His competitor dared to mention that these events would be called war crimes according to todays standards, which made Zeman come up with the statement that Schwarzenberg is a German agent. A very ugly election campaign, but the simpletons in the rural regions (where he won most votes) fell for it.

Anyway, Czech republic is a parliamentarian republic, the power of the president is rather limited and not comparable to Obama in the USA

Zeman can withdraw his rear, but nothing more. Even the news states it clearly that the president has no real power. But Serbian trolls can be expected. They even did when Sao Tome and Principe explained the situation, why shying away when Pakistan recognized and experiencing this obliterating defeat. Well,..

I congratulate Mr. Zeman on his victory, and believe he will be an honest and hardworking president for the Czech Republic. He may not be the most subservient leader of an EU nation, but I am sure he will do the best he sees fit for his country. An interesting quote a couple of days ago from the new Czech president - "I would withdraw even the charge d'affaires that is there now, let alone send an ambassador. Congratulation, Milos! Now it is time to reverse the Czech Republic's "recognition" of pseudo-kosovo which was done against the majority of the Czech parliament.

"The election is the first time the presidency has been decided by direct popular vote." This is not surprising considering how brussels behaves.

Karl

Let this election win serve as a reminder that the Czech Republic is not much different than the United States. Zeman won because of his promotion and stance of social welfare programs that many people in the Czech Republic depend upon because of the lack of jobs and its easier to leech off the government than to work a job and earn a living. CZ has been Obama-ized! YOU ELECTED Zeman now deal with it!
