could all the serbs that disagree with Danilo do so calmly? The worse thing about the folks who are "running" Pristina these days is that they don't let anyone admit or talk about the fact that they have problems.

Sure Serbia has problems, we should all face that fact, and it makes no sense to act like the KLA crowd and pretend everything is perfect and shout down anyone who does not see things our way.

Danillo has every right to believe in whatever he wants even if you and I think his logic is flawed. We need to listen to everyone if we want to figure out how to fix things.

It can fix itself and it must fix itself on its own!
There is no other way around!

You are advocating the same position that Greek,Spanish,Portuguese leaders had when they entered the EU:
"Oh somebody else will now solve our problems,we can layback now..."
And look what happened with these countries:they combined have an youth unemployment of ca. 60% !!!!!

I know that you Srbijanci, hopelessly naive as you are, look at the EU as Disneyland and want to leave Serbia the minute it joins the EU but Serbia will not and should not loose its resources, territories and people when joining such an organization but win new resources, territories and people or at least don`t loose them!

You are spouting typical DS,LDP yugocommunist, europhilia Goebbles propaganda trash, there are no bigger Serbian backstabbers on Serbian interests than Serb leftists,no Croats,Albanians and Muslims could harm Serbia as much as they are doing!

My god, paying with territory for entry into a new Yugoslavia that will blow up in a few years !

For nothing in return!

How sick is that!

What you don't really understand is the entire Balkans as a region is 'broken'. Now you and I may disagree on how it should be fixed but you pretend that Serbia is the exception in the region when its sort of the rule.

Now you still may very well be a non-Serb but the only reason I am not sold on that is because the self hating Serb really does in exist, but that is only in Serbia and are generally found in parts of Belgrade. They don't feel they live the life they deserve (which is very true) but learn to hate their entire nation for their problems. Chances are, they have never left Serbia to see how others around them are in some cases equally suffering while others are living worse off than they are.

Serbia is broken. deeply broken in ways that would shock all of you accustomed to living in the west.

well, you've at least got moi interested in your horror stories about the situation inside Serbia ...... so please don't pull your punches about shocking us ignorant outsiders -- what exactly is so unbearably broken inside Serbia? I, for one, am all ears. Don't say that nobody gave you a fair chance to prove your point. I only ask that you provide objective evidence rather than mere heresay to substantiate your claims.

The process of Eu ascension is the best blueprint (with attendant carrots plus a few sticks) that Serbia is going to get.

Everything else is just wishful thinking.

How are Bulgaria, Romania, Greece, Italy and Spain going?

Then we have the England who is desperate to move out. Why? If EU has done so much for the members how come nobody is happy?
How come the whole of Europe is broken and begging China to bail them out?
What the Hell are you talking about?

Danilo,

I understand your concern, and I completely agree that Serbia's current economic situation is unsustainable. Unfortunatly much of the damage is the result of intereference and influence from outside. I would like to point out to you, respectfully that the current economic situation in the EU is also unsustainable. They are better at politics, experts even, than they are at economics. The EU lives far beyond its own means.

Maybe it is horrible to you that I would tell you that the thing you have hope in is flawed. I don't say or do it to hurt you. I also want to give you some hopes. The countries that can start living within their means the soonest will be the countries that will do the best in the Future.
Unfortunately, no one is offering you another plan and I understand why you want to hold on to this unrealistic plan. I think it is unrealistic not just because Europe itself is broken, but because generally the people who drop bombs on your head while blaming you for it are not the ones that want to help you.

Danilo is right on this one. Serbia is straightening out a lot of things by going through the application process - in particular (and as an example) trade laws need to be bought into line with the rest of the world now that Serbia is not sheltering behind a banner of closed communism.

Also, don't assume that the UK will leave the EU. It is not a done deal, the idea to have a referendum is a political ploy to once and for all kill-off the anti-EU opposition - either by leaving or by getting a vote to stay in. Either way, the main parties can get rid of the issue for the next generation or two.

The EU does need to be adaptable - and it has become rather rigid. The British PM is wanting to debate change within the EU - and he is not alone wanting this.

Serbia cannot fix itself. it simply cannot. It would be nice if it could, but it can't.

Serbia needs a blue-print to fix itself.

So why join ?

The EU is like the old Soviet Union. It looks impressive and can put on a good show, but inside it is rotten. The Soviet Union collapsed quickly and without warning. The same will happen to the EU. Serbia is better off as an independent state with its own currency.

The EU may be around for a few more years but I wouldn't count on much more than that. The EU isn't the way to go for any nation, this government is stupid to follow this path.

These are wise words, but only words! True, England looks like it wants to leave the EU and the Serbs are wanting so badly to join. Why not have good relations with all countries instead of joining a group that may set conditions on you.

If a referendum were to be held in Britain now, that country would leave, while at the same time, "Serbia is paying too steep a price in order to join a political alliance that may not even exist in a few years' time," said Popović.

Be assured, the EU (with its ancestor EC) will still exist in a few years, and it will exist much longer than the socialist federal YU existed, let alone 'Serbia-Montenegro'.
