Yes it has become a country that has no industry; unemployment is more 50% and living hand to mouth off EU scraps thrown off Brussels’ table. Now what democratic institutions are you talking about when a EU’s recent audit states that Kosovo is still a major problem where after a decade of supervision its court systems are not functioning, its police force is not interested in investigating crime and are happy sitting down and collecting their pay. Their judiciary does not behave impartial and its loyalty is family and clam groups (behavior very much akin to cave dwellers)
(sj, 26 January 2013 11:38)

Very enlighting analysis. It shows precisely why Kosovo is best being independent from Serbia, otherwise it would have all problems that you highlighted + the Serbian army, police and judges in Kosovo. So, for Kosovo, being independent from Serbia is less of an hell then being under Serbia.

Or just to simplify so that you understand... If I'm living in Siberia at -20°C, have a possibility to go to Serbia at -2°C but don't have a visa to go somewhere in the Chinese paradise at +20°C, I'd go to Serbia for now. But I do understand that Serbs have a mentality of all or nothing and, unless they are able to go to China they would stay in Siberia forever.

And another thing, you do not need EU membership to be a country, but you do need UN membership to be considered a sovereign nation.
(Ari Gold, 25 January 2013 16:09)

Oh, please, the above is a joke, isn't it? Ukraine has been a UN member from 1945. You are not seriously saying that Ukraine was considered a sovereign nation from 1945 to 1990. Similarly to any other international organization, UN is not in the business of recognizing countries.

And in any case this is a moot argument. Kosovo under Serbia would not be a UN member anyway, so I'm not sure what the point of the discussion is - lack of UN membership has no bearing on Kosovo's decision on whether to be under Serbia or not.

Now I see that the German Ambassador to Belgrade joining Dacic at a new factory built by the Germans, but what I’m curious about is why doesn’t German industry open factories in Kosova? You know the one recognized by over 100 countries and yet Pristina has to kiss Belgrade’s arse at every point.
And you talk about Serbia’s ambitions being frozen eh?

Ari: "And another thing, you do not need EU membership to be a country, but you do need UN membership to be considered a sovereign nation."

No, we don't. According to Convention on the Rights and Duties of States:
"The state as a person of international law should possess the following qualifications: (a) a permanent population; (b) a defined territory; (c) government; and (d) capacity to enter into relations with the other states."

Kosova has all of these qualities, and therefore is a state in the eyes of the International Law. Membership in particular organizations doesn't make or unmake states. Rump Yugoslavia for example was not a member of the UN, and still was considered a state. Insofar as a territory has a government that is able to enact and execute laws in that territory, it is a state.

The only benefit of the UN membership, is protection by the UN charter. However there have been plenty of UN member states that have been militarily subdued. Kosova has a far stronger protection from the biggest military alliance there is: NATO. As far as there are aggressive designs on it's territory, NATO will remain active and engaged on Kosovo. UN could not even pretend to be a stronger security shield than NATO.
There's no economic benefits to joining UN. There's plenty of poor countries in the UN that did not become any richer by being UN members.
So, no. We don't need UN, and we especially don't need it that bad to trade it for chunks of our country.

Judging by the heated arguments, Kosova is anything but frozen. In 12 years, it has gone from being a post war territory to a country with government, democratic institutions and recognized as such by more than half of the countries in the world. What is frozen though, is Serbia's colonialist ambition in Kosova, and it shall remain frozen, not decades or centuries, but for ever.

(KOSOVA, 25 January 2013 13:34)

Actually I agree with you. And the thing is I am content with that and most Serbs are too considering EUroskepticism is on the rise. The idea that if you join the same political union as Germany you will somehow eventually live like Germans do is a dead fantasy.

Serbia can become much more competitive by staying out of the EU and focusing on its FTA with Russia which many European companies would try to come to Serbia and take advantage of. You do not improve your country by begging other stronger gov'ts for handouts as they are not investors, you focus on making for example Volkswagen want to come to Serbia, not the German gov't.

And another thing, you do not need EU membership to be a country, but you do need UN membership to be considered a sovereign nation. So that is good, let the situation stay in limbo. Eventually Albanians with a future will see nothing comes out of the "newborn" b.s. and will leave. The terrorists will remain, but they will be defeated eventually.

Kosovo will never be a state. It's a province of Serbia. It will never join UN for many reasons. Sorry Albanians you can't cut people open, sell their organs, burn their churches, desecrate their cemeteries and threaten, intimidate and kill their people; then you expect to claim statehood?? Just ridiculous. Time is NOT on your side.

United Nations membership is given to a sovereign country only. Kosovo is not sovereign. Kosovo is a UN protectorate under resolution 1244. Kosovo can have "meaningful participation" in UN agencies that do not require statehood, such as the World Health Organisation.
