It is also a perfect example of "distraction politics". He's getting the people and the media to talk about this proposed EU referendum (which probably won't happen) so they don't talk about (and forget) his Government's current unpopular polices and economic cuts ect.

Decoding Cameron's wish list of repatriated powers I think it would probably include all the "financial advantages" of uncountable, unregulated so to speak casino banking, relaxing worker's rights and protection for the poor and vulnerable people, relaxing health and safety rules, loose tax laws and freedom from the European court of human rights.

My own feeling is there won't be any unilateral renegotiation of the UK's position within the EU as such a move will open Pandora's box with the 26 other members doing exactly the same on certain EU policies are not satisfied with.

I think the reason for Cameron's announcement of a referendum is to try to paper the cracks within his own party and regain some of the voters who are leaning towards UKIP.

Since the majority of business and political elites in UK are making noises against any detachment from the EU I do think that come next general election-if not sooner-Cameron will be an ex-prime minister.

However, Cameron did not spell out what powers he would like to see the Britain take back as part of a new settlement or what would happen if the negotiations did not go his way.

Mr Cameron is a typical politician, bark all he wants. The UK exports 48% of its products to the EU,they will not leave. The UK is not the power they used to be, it's an empty threat and the rest of the EU knows it.

"Cameron warned that Britain, the world’s sixth economic power, could leave the EU if the Union did not make key reforms."

And Britain is professing support for Serbia's application to join this union that it itself might leave?????? All the talk about the EU being the right path for the Balkans? Talk about a forked tongue!

This is if the Tories outright win the next general election (able to form a majority Government) and considering they're not very popular at the moment in a coalition Government, this is just a pipe dream.

Call-Me-Dave Cameron will say anything to get a second term.
