You only have to look at Slovenia, which has spent all the moneys they recieved from the breakup of Yugoslavia. Also, the EU has been reducing its “contribution” to Slovenia’s budget since 2008 and now you have regular demonstrations with the people actually demanding an explanation from their politicians where was this better they were promised if they left Yugoslavia.
Croatia is not far behind Slovenia since even Milanovic cannot fix Croatia’s economy. The difference between Serbia and the rest of the Balkans is that it has enormous potential while the rest have peaked or never will peak. I find it so amusing to have Tourism flung at me as giving Croatia their wealth. Not it’s was not tourism but the EU filling Zagreb’s coffers up until 2008. Now with Brussels fighting for survival no more aid; its sink or swim.
I used to listen to Croats talk about how they were propping up Serbia in the old Yugoslavia. Croatia in 2013 is finished.
I clearly recall HTV showing Jadranka Kosor at a factory where one employee asked why hasn’t her government enticed outside interests to invest in Croatia. She answered “Both the existing and previous government have done all in their power to do exactly just that, but Croatia is a very small market and no one is interested”.
