Minister to talk Belgrade-Thessaloniki canal in China

Serbian Minister of Mining Milan Bačević will visit China Jan. 21-27 to discuss the construction of a Belgrade-Thessaloniki canal with Chinese companies.

Madness. Have you ever driven through Macedonia to Greece? There are hardly any trucks going south of Skopje to Greece. There is hardly any trade. Greece is on its back as well. So what is the use of an expensive canal when there is no trade? And even if there was any trade it is better to invest in improving the road infrastructure than digging a canal with god knows what kind of environmental impacts. Big bottleneck is the road south from Nis to the border.

The Danube is not even used to its potential simple because there is not enough trade. Making a canal is a big megalomaniac project and Serbia has other priorities to spend money on.
