"I lived there and I know it was even worse then your description."

You're right. At least in the Milosevic times, a comparison to South African apartheid's quite accurate. And as we all know, the whites there also saw themselves as the victims of black terrorism.

Fortunately South Africa had Mandela. Kosovo had Rugova, but he was eventually considered as just another one of those people from the old communist days. Thaci followed - most unfortunately.

@ Mendo: Most Croats, Serbs, Montenegrins or Bosniaks I know unfortunately had very little knowledge about the situation in Kosovo. Basically Albanians were those who owned the ice cream parlors. Very little was known about Albanian history and culture. Not even the school books bothered to write much about this.

Those few I know who actually visited Kosovo were deeply shocked. I remember one Montenegrin friend saying: "I thought something like this was only possible in Africa."

Now I wouldn't say things were as bad as in Ethiopia, but just think about all those government built houses with just one central kitchens for each floor! What other place in Yugoslavia had similar living conditions? Of course Kosovo was neglected by the rest of the country. There's absolutely no doubt!

Tell this to the Serbs cos as I said I lived there and I know it was even worse then your description. But then again reading Slavic magazines, books and newspapers and watching Slavic TVs Kosovo was a paradise and I don't blame people like Simot, Ari Gold, MickeC and Peggy that have been brainwashed by this.

@ Simot: Autonomy is not the same as republic status. I agree the situation of Albanians in Kosovo under Tito was better than under Enva Hoxha, but that's a rather extreme comparison. They certainly didn't have the same status as for example Bosniaks. The centrally planned economy of the central government & the Serb Republic within Yugoslavia certainly didn't do enough for the industrialization of Kosovo, just to give one example.

@Simot

You read whole different things about Kosovo cos its Serbian propaganda. All you have to do ask us that live in Kosovo and we tell you the truth. Fikret is right but it was even worst then that. Yes we had a university so what? My father was sucked from his job just becouse he was K-Albanian way before the wars started in Yugoslavia or to be precise it was in 1990. Keep reading Serbian but nothing will change the truth.

@Fikret thank you for ackowledging Albanians (non-Slavic indigenous people) were inorporated into a SLAV federation called Yugoslavia.

What were our chances of survival with respect for our rights intact?

Serbian greed destroyed Yugoslavia..

Well Fikret, as a matter of fact i read whole different things, as how during Yugo times Albanians could freely go into Kosovo where they had many institutions in their own language like media and educational ones, even a university. The Albanians in Kosovo also made a whole lot more money than they would in Albania and so to me that doesn't sound that bad at all, especially considering if for example our significant population of Muslim immigrants would demand universities and media in entirely their own language funded by the state and all that, i would be considered a grave desinterest in willingness to cooperate and integrate in the excisting culture. You can already guess my point of view on the Kosovo situation i suppose.

i agree with the serbs on the issues and they should get more rights in croatia and get their autonomy for the krajina region and for them to return to their homes and get paid and everything rebuilt for them.so to you serbs forget about kosova and push for your rights in croatia because you do have rights in kosova.

"Good to see that while the one party is screaming how peaceful coexistance with serbia is impossible (the Kalbanians), the country that Serbia was in terribly heavy war with in the 90s is now at the same time speaking with Serbia about a better future cooperation between the two countries."

I agree and I disagree. Yes, it's good to see Croats and Serbs cooperating. But the situation with the Albanians is different. Let's face it: They were the neglected nation in Yugoslavia - which defined itself as a brotherhood of slavs. This was basically justified with their apparent underdevelopment; in my opinion a highly questionable, but unfortunately self-fullfilling argumentation to some degree.

While many slavs of former Yugoslavia have sentimental memories of the Tito era despite of its well known problems, Albanians don't have them. And they have no true reason for them either.

Also funny to notice is that the Croatian PM forgot to unbutton his colbert! According to etiquiette a gentleman does not sit down with his colbert buttoned but it's not relevant really :P
