All this seems to reinforce the notion that everything this party does is a maneuver to consolidate power. They posture in their "fight against corruption", knowing that some voters won't see through the nonsense of what they do. How many times has Vucic gone to the press and virtually declared suspects guilty before they've even been given a fair trial (as fair as trials can be in the Serbian judicial system). And, oh, funny how all the people arrested seem to be political opponents. So in other words, they're killing two birds with one stone there: on the one hand, they're taking out rivals; on the other, they're depicting the entire opposition to be a bunch of crooks, thereby making SNS look great in comparison.

All this, of course, is just a big move to set the stage for Dacic's ouster. Vucic knew all along that he would use Dacic for a year or so -- just long enough to fool the voters into thinking that SNS is about positive change, thereby gaining sufficient support to allow them to dominate the next coalition. And, as the source of this leak points out, Vucic must take advantage of a narrow window, because it won't be long before voters fall out of favor with SNS due to the lackluster Serbian economy. Vucic must get himself installed as PM quickly, and with a strong enough coalition to ensure that he can survive the next few years -- even as Serbia languishes in high unemployment, the endless dead-end politics of Kosovo, more painful ICTY verdicts, etc.

That's the socalled 'Putin method': Fighting against corruption and crime, but selectively arresting only people who have some connections to the opposition. The crooks that are good friends with or supporters of the ruling party don't have to fear anything and can get away with their millions gained by corruption and abuse of state money.

However, the source was not willing to predict "what kind of government we will have after that", but was certain that Vučić "would be the new prime minister".

Oh, new elections again? I'm sure the people will be happy about that. And somehow funny that it took the SNS that long to realize that it was a big mistake (and utterly nonsense and against any common sense) to give away the most important job in the government, the PM position, to the much smaller coalition partner.

What kind of government does SNS expect? Why should SPS enter a new coalition with different conditions after the SNS deliberately broke up?

And well, popularity comes and goes, once people in Serbia will see that except for big words and platforms not much will been reached in reality, it will fall again.

I only agree with your first part. The transition towards true democracy and for Serbia to gain is to oust leftist remnants of TITO's philosophy. These guys just build bureaucratic industry at the expense of investments (ask Ikea for one). As for the economy with Croatia's accession to the Eu, Serbia will gain from many business relocations, then there is the gas transit, Fiat is selling Zastava made cars like hotcakes and most importantly the opening of new markets for the arms industry(during Yugoslav times it was worth twice the tourism industry).

It all depends on favourable status from just two pillars that represent Serbia's foreign policy Russia and the US. The conservatives are the ones that can open these doors to the next level while the leftists gaze in the peepholes and pretend there nationalists beating their chests whilst indebting the country. But that would mean the select few might lose out on their comfortable lifestyle selling whatever Serbia has got politically and economically. Dacic has always been a reactionary leader playing to what people want to hear whilst Vucic is a bolder proactive leader who will make a few mistakes but they will be far outweighed by his successes and ambitions for Serbia.
