“Serbia makes important steps toward EU”

Head of the EU Delegation to Serbia Vincent Degert has said that 2012 was a very good year in relations between the EU and Serbia.

Sure beats me why Serbia should still want EU membership -- at a time when people inside the EU are protesting about their financial problems and austerity measures - at a time when even EU biggie UK is now openly questioning the wisdom of membership http://euobserver.com/news/118564 http://euobserver.com/political/117204

Or perhaps Serbia is paying the EU back in spades -- milking it for whatever financial aid and help in economic reform that the latter can still afford to give? If so, could be a smart strategy on Serbia's part to appear to be still interested in membership.
