As they say ignorance is better than half knowledge. The Turkish part of Northern Cyprus declared independence in 1983 which s recognised only by Turkey whereas the rest of the world recognises the Republic of Cyprus government as the legitimate one.Partition has always been the Turkish intentions and this is being proved by the Turkish demands in recent talks.

Since the Republic of Cyprus is the legitimate representative of all people in Cyprus (minus the Turkish settlers which are in violation of the Geneva Convention and various UN resolutions)applied in 1990 to join the EU.In fact, the Turkish Cypriot leader Denktash rejected FOUR peace plans before the Republic of Cyprus entered the European union, thus depriving the occupied north of EU membership.

The accession of the Cyprus Republic to the EU was a years long process and the outcome was never in question. What was in question was the inclusion of the occupied north, as the EU had repeatedly made it clear to Turkey that Cyprus would enter the EU one way or another.Doble sandards? I don't think so.

I agree with you. I don't think it is double standards either.

t is not double standards, it is learning from your mistakes. And yes they can deny Serbia on the same grounds if they choose to do so. They call the shots, not Serbia or even Cyprus for that matter.

"The UN mission in Cyprus was established on March 27, 1964 by UN Resolution 186, in the interest of preventing a recurrence of conflicts between Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities on the island."

Almost 50 years? Unbelievable! Then expect UNMIK to have a long, long stay in Kosovo. Of course with a reduced number, but in Cyprus, there are still about 1000 UN peacekeepers present.

Exactly, The EU set a precedent when the accepted Cyprus as a member. They cannot deny Serbia on the same grounds.

Even though I am not a fan of Serbia joining the European Union, I think that Serbia should insist and work towards having the same treatment as other Countries like Cyprus in the European Union accession process.

Obviously, Serbia should not recognize an Independent Kosovo under any conditions, but this effort is to establish Standards, rather than joining the European Union.

The Standard was set with allowing Cyprus to join the European Union, even though Cyprus has a Territorial Dispute; and, that Standard must not be arbitrarily lowered for other Countries, who might want to join the European Union like Serbia or Moldova.
