Thanks for the responses to my question - I hadn't taken into account that Serbia and the other peoples in Yugoslavia had different interpretations of the war, making it difficult to find a way to commemorate it in the past. Here in the U.S., Armistice Day has become Veterans' Day, a day to honor those who fought in all our wars. By now, for us, WWI is most important as the precursor to WWII - "another damned European war" most people had no intention of getting involved in until Pearl Harbor and Hitler's declaration of war against us. And it makes sense that a politician would expect a political payoff for a gesture that appeals to Serbian patriotic feelings while including the country in a Europe-wide day of mourning.

Why has Serbia never observed Armistice Day in the past? (I hadn't realized that it didn't.)

My feeling is the current government needs to earn some 'patriotic' capital, after what they are doing lately. Dacic sounded like the end of the eighties with his 'we Serbs win wars but lose peace'.

Though Reader offers a good opinion, it seems to me that in WWI Serbia was the nation in question, where as post WW2 it was Yugoslavia. I can see that Yugoslavia decided to not witness Nov 11, and picked a more communist day to commemorate.
We'll also notice that few nations had any ceremonies in the early years as most 'veterans' wanted to put this part of their lives behind them and get on with their everyday lives. Eventually their pasts started to be important to both them and everyone else.

I find it interesting how ,revisionists such as Oddmon gloss over the fact that the war started because "larger powers" were not allowing smaller countries too exercise their right of Sovereignty and Security ,over their own people ,Land and their Nation...
