Russians to be given Serbian steel mill "for free"

It is becoming increasingly likely that Russia's Uralvagonzavod (UVZ) will become the owner of Železara Smederevo steel mill, Belgrade-based daily Danas writes.

Lenard, Croatia is not building anything. It will be very happy if it will be able to pay off its interest on its ever bloated debt. Good luck!

First, the US Steel plant you have in mind is in Slovakia, not the Czech Republic, and second, US Steel invested millions in the plant to bring it up to date, including installing environmental protection equipment to protect the Serbian environment and Serbian workers. And they did not shut the blast furnaces down completely before they left because the government was hoping to find a buyer soon to move in and start up production again. One reason US Steel had to give up on the plant was that the government at the time wasn't willing to agree to layoffs or tax reductions when the market for steel collapsed - I wonder what kind of deal they'll give the Russians? There's still excess capacity for steel production in the world. How many jobs, for how many years, are the Russians offering, or are they just planning to move the equipment back home?

It's not for free. Nothing it for free.

They gave you their VETO power in UN Security Council for Kosova issue so now is payback time.

Questioner,
Yes, US Steel bought it, and as I mentioned, they took everything that was worth in that mill to Czech Republic (such was modern zink-coating line for sheet metal, etc.), then sold it back to Serbia for a dollar, without even bothering to shot-down the mill properly.
Right now, that steel-mill isn't worth that much and it has only outdated technologies left in it. The ones that were not needed in Czech Republic.
So, considerable investment will be needed.
Besides...
"In line with that, the government decided to call the tender, which already fell through twice, instead of selling Železara to UVZ in a direct deal."
There will be a tender, but nobody gave even a dollar, not ones but twice.
But, here is a chance - one more tender!
I'm glad that Croatia will need that much steel, Lenard. There is a lot of Croatian investment in Serbia, so I'm sure that Steel-mill in Sisak could buy Smederevo. More money for the budget , the better.

Sisak should bid 2 dollars and own it!
But, I really don't understand the logic - we don't want it, but why would Russians have it?

"... since this was the only way for the factory to survive and for its workers to keep their jobs. "

That's why.

Don't tell me it would be better for Serbia to close the factory and send the workers home without income?

Sretan I have no problems of good cheap Russian/Serbian dumped steal. Croatia will be needing a lot of it were building 10 new patrol naval vessels and 4 large war vessels lots of steal goes in to them. With the cheap steal we can also underbid our world competition in building modern merchant vessels its a win for Croatia thanks. If you guys like Russia taking over Serbia for a few pennies on the dollar that's your businesses.

Almost as good as the deal from some years ago to give NIS to Russia for some peanuts without a tender...
(Questioner, 23 October 2012 17:37)

LOL! Love the comments from our local K*-Albanians criticising the sale of NIS, which was sold for €500 million with another several hundred million being invested into the company and guaranteeing the South Stream goes through Serbia, which will further generate several hundreds of millions of euros in transit fees annually.

On the other hand, we just had Pristina sell "their" "state" energy firm to the Turks for a mere €26 million, without a tender of course. Check -> http://rt.com/news/kosovo-protests-energy-sell-off-672

So anyway, I hope some people are learning. US Steel purchased this plant for $50 million, sold it back to Serbia for $1 and now if Serbia gives it to this Russian company for free on the condition that the jobs remain, then that is another great deal. Better to have a steel mill running with people employed than one rusting and people unemployed.

As we can read, this is a political decision rather than a financial one, presumably due to the mill being unprofitable. As mentioned, Russia has its chance now to maintain influence in the region by ensuring this alternative is seen to be a better option than the "no alternative to EU".

Watch and learn my friends.

"As if there is a problem to give steel-mill for free? Read the article. It used to belong to US Steel, (but nobody said that Serbia is going to become 51st US state?)."
(Sreten, 23 October 2012 19:08)

The small difference is: It was SOLD to US steel for some milloms (and some years later returned for $1 instead of shutting it down), and not given away for $1.

Lazar

Excellent move in my opinion. The article explains why.

As for americans, the question should be did they on purpose screw up the stuff while shutting it down... would be interesting if they could be fined for doing that.

I don't understand this negativity from some commentators. "...Russia's rear kissers.." , "...Serb Oblast of Russia..."
As if there is a problem to give steel-mill for free? Read the article. It used to belong to US Steel, (but nobody said that Serbia is going to become 51st US state?).
After stripping steel-mill of all the equipment worth something and transferring it to the steel-mill in Czech Republic also owned by US Steel they wanted to close it. To keep it open, and workers employed, state of Serbia bought it for $1!!!
They tried to sell it twice, but there were no buyers.
If you are interested Lenard - rather then let Russians have it for free, offer them 1 dollar for it. There will be obligations, of course, like paying thousands of workers...
But, this way you could keep Serbia out of Russia, and perhaps part of some future Lenardia...

What's worse. A steel mill sold for peanuts, or a steel mill shutdown and hundreds out of work with no hope of every finding another job? It sucks but if the yanks sold it back for a buck, selling it for free in the hopes someone can make it work is better than leaving the complex to rot.
