"No where in the article does it say that the foreign airline will assume any debt. It just says the debt wont be part of the new company. Most likely it's being assumed partially by the government.

That could be it - but the government is supposed to be cutting spending, and paying JAT's debts is not going to help there. (There's now a little matter of 1 billion to maybe 5 billion euros due to people in Kosovo after the Eur Court for Human Rights judgement for unpaid pensions, don't forget.) Why wouldn't the government simply guarantee the lease payments, if they have the resources, and keep the company going under Serbian ownership? They're giving 50% of the company merely to guarantee the lease payments? (That's why I figured the UAE company would take care of the debt.)
Anyway: the slots are definitely worth something, but apparently not enough to persuade anyone to take over JAT as a going concern along with its debts. Still, Dinkic made a good case for voiding a lot of the old Yugoslav debt with both international private and government lenders after the end of the war, so maybe he's really come up with something. I'm in favor of anything that saves jobs, at this point.
