1.)That kind of happend anyway to many peoples in the Balkans during the turkish occupation, thats why you have turkish speaking minorities there today
2.)Religion,as it were is the same, wether its islam or christianity,so I dont really see any major difference between one faith that says "you will go to hell if u dont do this" and another that says "you will go to hell if you dont do this".
3.)During the long centuries of ottoman occupation, the church co-operated many times with the sultans government,as well as join any uprising. When you are a political organization, you do what you can.
4.)During the Serbian revolution, influences from the french revolution of 1789 seeped into many of the intellectual circles of the serbian national revival.Secualism, ideas orienting towards parliamentary democracy, science over superstition and other ideas,in the face of stiff conservative opposition.some church members were part of this, many if not most opposed it in general. The church had for centuries kept the official church slavonic as its key language of scripture, meaning modern Serbian was not written widely about or formed coherently untill Vuk Karadzic put it all together.

So, My friend i guess its true that if it was for the church were would not be speaking turkish yes..
We would not be speaking modern serbian either!

If it weren't for religion son, you'd be speaking Turkish now and your family be telling folks
that you hurt your hip in a car wreck or that a donkey kicked you, and the only parades you'd
ever know of are the ones performed for the local Chiefs of Police.
