Typical EU nonsense. They can't fix the economy, so they worry about other people's business, in the hopes that their own people will be distracted.

Jesus, Bo, some citizens of Islamic countries would like to execute Westerners because of cartoons and Youtube videos, and you go on about justice around the world. There are huge differences in what constitutes a major crime around the world, in some, you can be killed for speaking something others find blasphemous.

"There are very good reasons why so many countries have abolished the use of the death penalty - it is time for all the others to follow."

The most absurd thing is that the group of countries with the higest number of death penalties are very inhomogenous, spanning from communist China to 'western' and 'democratic' USA, and of course the many Muslim sharia states. (numbers from 2011)

China: No official numbers, estimated 1700-5000
Iran: 360
Saudi-Arabia: 82
Iraq: 68
USA: 43
Yemen: 41

Sadly, many of the countries using the death penalty do not give confidence about the quality of their politics, policing or judiciary.

I am sure that there are many wrongly executed each year on the basis of 'confessions' obtained by beatings and other tortures.

In many cases there are countries using the death penalty for activities which are not even crimes in other countries. Typical amongst these are islamic countries who are trying to impose their doctrines on others - even if they don't approve of behaviour, they do not have to kill to enforce it. Also, political executions occur for example to suppress opposition to dictatorial systems.
