What I understand is that the EU is giving financial aid to Serbia to help her prepare for membership -- the EU gives aid to all applicants it seems and so this aid to Belgrade is nothing exceptional -- but why the EU continue to splurge at a time when it itself is in financial straits sure beats me .....

Bottomline is that methinks Serbia should get all the aid that it can from the EU but without joining this sinking Titanic in the end! And who knows, this might just be what the current Serbian government has in mind!

2B EU or not to be EU that is the question. Why don't we have a referendum. The same on Kosovo. Then things will be clearer. In any case it is not up to Nikolic, the SNS or any other political entity. Serbia is not a 'nanny-state' (like Russia has become). Serbia is still a democracy. Let everyone decide for themselves.

Serbia may as well be in the EU - but the pressure about Kosovo is likely to put everyone in Serbia off the idea of joining.

The EU should stop just addressing a negative and should make a bigger effort to give benefit to the people of Serbia. The EU is mis-selling itself as a stick-waver rather than a group of friendly companions (which is what it was intended to be).

The EU should establish an acceptable status for Kosovo.

At the EU level, this matter should be treated as if there is no recognition of Kosovo as a 'country'. The reasonable answer is for the EU to announce that it is treating Kosovo as a protectorate under 1244; this is totally logical because not all of its members accept the idi, there is a UN resolution that covers the case, and (significantly) it addresses the point that Serbia does not accept the udi. If Serbia would then announce that it is treating Pristina as an autonomous entity under 1244 then there would be no problem for Serbia with seeking cooperation for the future.

Serbia should insist on this - and take as much time as necessary before agreeing to join the EU.

A message to posters:

You dreamers!

The EU is not sinking and will not go away.

Just because you don't like it, is no reason not to understand it!

The EU is actually made up of peoples represented by governments, who have decided that group action via the EU is economically more effective than individual governance. That will remain true even if there is a large scale economic collapse - things would be even worse for everyone without cooperation.

If you want to attack the EU do - I am all for it - but do not assume that it will disappear or that collapse will be total or make anything better for Serbia.

Zoran,

We've been in Serbia approximately the same time. I'm not sure how you earn your living, but I have some insight into how things work here also with an outside perspective like you. Not sure if you have experience starting and running a business in Australia or not to have something to compare to or any sort of career you left behind in Australia to compare being either an employee or business owner there and here. (or maybe you're just living on family money. you do seem to have a lot of free time).

To me it's fairly evident that Serbia can NOT solve its many, many, many, many endemic problem without some sort of road-map. I wish that weren't the case, but to me it's plainly evident that it is.

Serbia does need to solve its problems on its own

The process of EU ascension is the best road-map Serbia is ever going to get to solve its problems ON ITS OWN.

The EU isn't perfect by any means. It's a work-in-progress since the 60s (longer than any Serbian state has existed).

Probably but that suits most of us Serbs anyway. Just wondering, where does that leave Albanians, who are very eager to join? No Serbia in EU = No "Kosova"* in EU.

Once again Nikolic hits the nail on the head. It is time to solve our problems internally, with our interests in mind and to start respecting ourselves. We will never get anywhere if we believe someone else will solve our problems.

And Albanian run KiM, and Albania, centuries after that, Adem. But believe me, Serbia does not want to join this rotting Union anyway. It's all for show.
