Leonidas,

the banks operate in some countries because those countries make the laws favorable to them, and the countries do that because they get benefits from those banks. Regarding your last two questions, something tells me that money lost by Albanians in 1997 is in Cyprus too. King Berisha of Albania has good ties there.

You seem to confuse the banking sector with the country of Cyprus. The banks in Cyprus are private and their activities-as the activities of most of the World's banks,if not all- are surrounded by a veil of secrecy. To re-enforce my point is worth mentioning that only two months ago Standard Chartered Bank(mainly a British bank)was busting UK and Western sanctions against Iran by laundering Iran's oil revenues for over three years. Was the UK government colluding with the bank in its operations?Well, the UK government said the had no idea of the banks activities.

As far as I recall, back in 2000, the UN chief prosecutor Carla Del Ponte
investigating the allegations that Milocevic had siphoned money abroad,
said that many governments had assisted her tribunal, including the government in Cyprus, where Mr Milosevic was alleged to have had assets but she wasn't able to provide any hard evidence.

It's very difficult,if not impossible,to trace bank accounts of corrupt politicians in offshore heavens and operating under nominee structure.Back in 1997 Albanians lost between $1.5 and $2 billion in the fraudulent pyramid schemes.Have Albanians traced the banks where Ali Berisha kept his loot? What about Thaci and his gang milking the EU funds?Do they keep their loot in Kosovo banks?Food for thought.

If Kosovo, then Northern Cyrpus.
Kosovo really had to be solved because the issue was there since 1999. Well, Cyprus is divided for forty years now.
Why not recognizing Northern Cyprus then?

"However, Cyprus still remains the largest financial centre in the area,"

Leonidas, truly amazing. Tell me, if you will, how do you put together your ideas about evil bankers, corporations, and corrupt western financial system, with the fact that Cyprus has been listed so many times as an offshore financial center, tax haven, where those evil people are hiding their money? Which, according to your words, is the largest in the area. I mean, how is it possible to have such self-induced double-thought? You know that Cyprus is an offshore paradise right? You know the money stolen from the Serbian people by their own politicians in that amazing hyperinflation episode in the 90s, that money was deposited in Cyprus banks, right?

So Germany will keep Serbia out of the EU and Cyprus will keep "Kosova"* out. Oh well, no EU for us.

Looks like Germany always makes a big mess of Europe when it takes the helm.

I am not surprised at all by the comments posted by the Albanian contigent on this pages reaffirming once again their brotherly feelings towards the Turks.

Even the elitist corrupt EU got this right by not allowing the Turkish Cypriots to join the EU knowing fully well had it done otherwise it would've legitimatised the Turkish occupation of the Northen part of Cyprus, the 300000 Turkish settlers from Anatolia, the 400000 Turkish army and the uprooting of more than 200000 Greek Cypriots from their lands they've lived for 5000 years .

Cyprus may be at present in financial troubles due to the fact their banking sector was exposed to the Greek crisis and as result they've suffered a hair cut on the value of their investments. However, Cyprus still remains the largest financial centre in the area, their tourism is booming and moving towards of becoming an energy hub for Europe to to large discoveries of Gas in its territorial waters.

Cyprus will never recognise the pseudo-state called Kosovo and it would also not allow Turkey to come near the EU(it's also convenient for the French and Germans).

Thank Cypriots! They showed that they care of friendship with Serbia. I know that Serbia will know how to appreciate it.

??? Friendship? Reading may be helpful sometimes: "Cyprus will never recognize Kosovo as a matter of principle, but also of international law, he stressed."

And worth to mention that Cyprus is in a similar situation to Serbia, where an ethnic minority in the north of their territory declared independence and invented an internationally not recognized pseudo state.

This is the epitomy of what a comical world we live in. Cyprus supports Serbia's goal toward the EU in which Cyprus is well the biggest mistake of the EU history. It has its own huge territorial dispute which is the basis of most of the EU's hesitancy on Serbia, they do not want to admit another country with such issues. Cyprus is on the verge of financial collapse and wants to bring Serbia which is also on the verge of financial collapse into the EU which will further strain the EU saftey net probably to the breaking point.
Then if that is not enough, Serbia which has had a peacekeeping UN mission in what it calls its territory whose purpose is to keep Serb forces and police out of Kosovo, is sending peacekeepers to help the UN do the same in Cyprus.
No one has the imagination capable of putting such a story together, and this is real life.

EU would've made the biggest mistake if it
accepted the Turkish Islamic north Cyprus as such a move would've legitimatise the theft of the properties of Greeks by Muslim Turks something that Cyprus won't allow to happen in Kosovo. No more Muslims in eu.
