And another reminder: If the autonomy would not have been revoked, and if the police and state institutions of YU would have acted in a civilized manner when it comes to dealing with separatists, i.e. arresting individual perpetrators of crimes instead of killing whole families and sending army and paramilitaries who looted and destroyed whole villages, calm would have prevailed, too.

Thumbs up for the comment.

Yugoslavia should have taken Canada's example. Canada had to deal with FLQ (front liberation du Quebec. FLQ committed crimes which Canadian authorities arrested only the perpetrator nationalists. French Canadians enjoy equal rights with English speaking Canadians, there fore when FLQ committed crimes, French Canadians sympathized with the victims and viewed FLQ as terrorists. The nationalist elements still exist in Quebec. They are now pursuing peaceful methods to succeed from Canada. Twice they have invoked referendum for independence and French Canadians have voted to saty in they union.

If Serbs treated ethnic Albanians with respect and dignity as equals and to focus on arresting radicals rather than to punish the entire population for the crimes of the radical elements than the Balkans would have been spared form the bloody wars.

There was an article here a few years back where a politician gave a women a gold coin because she had 5 children. I do agree with your point of view of the latter. I'm sure there are politicians that are in that situation :)

@MikeC Where do you get your stats from? 50yrs ago there weren't more serbians then albanians in kosovo/a. Look up the census numbers. And its sad that no one looks at the treaties that the kingdom of serbia signed and what "facts" they presented to the world powers back then. Not one single demographic stat was true but it was presented to gain territory as Serbia, Bulgaria, and Greece were vying to gain territory. The Serbs presented Albanized Serbs as far as Nis, Bulgarians presented Bulgarians past Lake Ohrid, and Greeks presented Albanized Greeks as far north passing Tirana. Greeks made deals with Serbs and once that didn't work out it and Bulgaria was set to gain all hell broke lose into the Balkan wars.
The area is full of lies from all parties and all demographic stats are biased. That is a fact. Repeat a lie long enough ppl start to think it is the truth.
Both parties seriously can't see how much you two ethnic groups have in common. You were all once Christians, your own kind betrayed you more so than your enemies, and your all thick headed individuals grasping to a past that never existed. Just myths that no one can verify.
Hopefully one day people will be able to sit and break bread together and laugh :)

Albanians in Kosovo have 10-12 children per family. 50 years ago there were more serbs then albanians in Kosovo. A high birthrate should not entitle albanians to someone elses territory. Kosovo is legaly serbian land but has illegaly been snatched by albanians

"Maybe women will get gold coins for having 5 babies from politicians."

Kiko, that sentence can be parsed in two ways: "women will get gold coins from politicians" or "women will have 5 babies from politicians". Which one is it? I prefer the second one. Just imagine..

Bingo, with the exception of "as it legally remains today" you have hit on the point. Kosovo was an autonomous province with the same freedoms and rights as a republic, but because it was not a republic Serbia was able to revoke their autonomy. Now you have the picture of why returning to an autonomous province is unacceptable to Kosovo, and the west. Serbia has done nothing to show a change, so autonomy could be granted tomorrow and revoked the following day and then we are back to gound zero where Serbs are once again expelling Albanians and oppression begins again.
The part about Kosovo legally being a province of Serbia is only under Serbian Constitution which 1244 has effectively annulled. Serbian law does not apply to the UN protectorate of Kosovo. You have your ICJ ruling that the DOI does not violate international law. If you want a clearer ruling take it back to the ICJ with an intelligent question this time. But as long as the countries that Kosovo needs to deal with to survive formal recognize it as independent it is not a province of Serbia.
The thing about legality is, it is only as good as your ability to enforce it. If you say something is illegal and everyone ignores it and you are unable to enforce it, then where are you?
Did you know that in Carmel California it is illegal " for a man to go outside in a jacket and pants that do not match" do you think anyone pays attention to that law or it is enforceable?

However, albanian ambitions for someone elses territory will never calm.

my version holds way more water than that leaky bucket you are parading around with. You really think that the US did all this, just to open a military base in Kosovo. They could have held up a bid card and said we want to open a base in southeastern Europe and had 7-8 countries within 500 km begging for it. These statements are only made from those who read about Bondsteel not from those who have ever visited it nor know any of the history there.
I have heard the stories, it was for the mines, it was for the pipeline, it was for the base. All from people who cannot see good in themselves so cannot fathom good in anyone else. The war was to stop the slaughter of a people in the midst of the western sphere of influence. And remember the Kosovo conflict did not happen until long after the conflicts in Bosnia and the west saw Serbian goals and what they were capable of.

As far as legalities are concernd, thanks to Vuk's help, everything is clear now that Kosovo's status as defined in Kosovo's Declaration of Independence is in accordance with international law.

But, yes, I agree that according to Serbia's law, Kosovo is Serbia's southern province. Unfortunately, Kosovo is not governed by Zimbabwe's or Serbia's law, but by international law.

I wonder who's going to take over whom going forward into the future? If this guy wants a census he might have to wait and it will not be done by Serbia but by the UN since Serbia follows 1244 to the T.

Now going forward if we look at population growth in 10 years time Albanians will be in Niš by 2022. Imagine that. My advice is Serbians should have more XXX and not use abortion clinics and be more pro life. Maybe women will get gold coins for having 5 babies from politicians.

Now to the gentlemen and ladies that bring churches into their conversations. It is a shame that these holy sites were desecrated in some form or another. Simply sad! If you look into the governments policy since the late seventies and specifically 1981 it's been their policy to build churches without a congregation. It's called marking your territory via the church.

Not one single Catholic church was touched. And more have been built since the war. Hmmmm no one ever mentions this from the Serbian side. Must be an oversight. Oh well...

There will be no serious talks unless Serbia is made to recognise Kosovo independence first as it did with Montenegro. Serbia did not like initially but then loved it.....))))
(EA, 17 September 2012 10:52)

Montenegro actually had a legal right to a referendum of independence not from Serbia but from the state union of Serbia & Montenegro. The Titoist Djukanovic exercised that right and by manipulating votes and allowing Albanians from Kosovo i Metohija take part but not Montenegrins living in other parts of Serbia managed to break apart that state union.

Kosovo i Metohija however is not and never was a republic. It is an integral part of the Republic of Serbia and is under temporary occupation. Serbia 'loved' when Montenegro broke up the state union because under that union Serbia (a country of over 9 million people including occupiers) and Montenegro (650,000 people) were treated as equal partners and had equal say in everything.

It was good that the state union ceased to exist. But not good for the Montenegrin people as the country is simply used as a cartel zone for the Montenegrin Titoists.

Well that not be there forever and when that illegal structure is defeated, I suspect Montenegro will vote to become an integral part of the Republic of Serbia. God knows Serbia could cripple Djukanovic if it wants but Beograd is made up of fifth columnists so..

EA, I did not say Serbia allowed anyone to be independent, do not twist my comments. I said that all former republics of Yugoslavia can go and do their own thing, and God bless them. But to claim that Serbia is the root for all the problems one nation now has, is ridiculous.

Sorry but you are not a coward for not wanting to engage another war with a multi national military alliance that is the strongest in the world. Rather it is you that is the coward for needing them to be able to proceed with your church burning, organ extracting, rape and obviously murder.

You are well aware that nobody is scared of the Albanians and the temporary occupation will be lifted very quickly whenever NATO leaves. We can sit here and argue as to when that will be but the only thing that is 100% certain is that Serbia will liberate Kosovo i Metohija whenever that does happen there is no getting around that.

Personally I think that if Serbia tried even today there would not be a bombing but probably sanctions and NATO providing support to the Jihadi terrorists. But regardless, Serbs say "Kad...tad" and that basically means when the time arrives we will be ready.

Now to the gentlemen and ladies that bring churches into their conversations. It is a shame that these holy sites were desecrated in some form or another. Simply sad!
