New NBS governor likely on Monday

Parliament Speaker Nebojša Stefanović says there is a possibility he will convene a session on Monday at which a new central bank governor will be elected.

Šoškić deserves credit for stepping down and helping to make it very difficult for governing politicians to eliminate the relative independence of the National Bank of Serbia. His resignation means they have lost a reason to introduce a (bad) new law.

He hasn't been an effective governor, but its hard to say that anybody would have done a good job in this economic climate.

Will we now have a politician in charge of the National Bank - which also undermines the principle of Bank independence? At the very least I expect Tabakovic to resign from SNS, as Nikolic has, before taking up any role...
