I have a different explanation in mind bganon. They are accountable now. Not something one cares for when one is in opposition. Now, they need to think in terms of what is real and what is not, not just radical rhetoric about things up in the air. It is funny though that this change is so prominent. I also personally think that B92 is making this even more prominent with their reporting. However, all of it is just words for now. Until things really move they will remain just words.

Nenad, almost all Serbian politicians are actors that only care about their own political careers. Just look at how long most of them have been in politics. Even when they outright lose an election, they go into opposition hibernation, and wait for an opportune time to get back into a ruling coalition. Serbia politics makes me sick. They change their party names, objectives, ideologies, allegiances, just to remain in politics. That is their most important mandate, self preservation. Laws on term of political service is the only way that Serbia can free itself of the lingering strangle hold that career politicians have on this country. But would they ever do such a law, it would be removing themselves from the feeding trough of Serbian politics. What would they do then, look for honest jobs?

My personal view, the US State Dept. has enough of their own problems without the Balkans and the Kosovo issue. I think at this point, they do not care anymore who rules KiM, as long as there is peace, and they do not have to waste anymore money on troops. The US has their Bondsteel base in the Balkans, that was their objective, whether the Serbs and Albanians get along, they do not care, as long as the US army does not have to be involved. They (US) have passed the buck to Eulex, in other words to the EU, and now just come out with words, nothing else. IMHO, this is the time for BG to get tough and say, ENOUGH!. You have taken KiM away from us, but you will not get N. Mitrovica. If you care to get involved in a frozen conflict that may extend for decades, be our gusts. The USA, because they are bullies, only react in kind. Let's see how much balls the new government in BG has. The DS had none, like a neutered bull, so any thing will an improvement.

Comm. Parrisson, yes of course Serbian voters choose, but it would be foolish to believe that there is no outside influence on the Serbian government. Of course there is influence, I'm surprised you don't realise that.

The west has its favourites as one might expect, but in diplomacy bluff, promises and threats are a big part of the game. If the Americans (and others) can overwhelm and bluff Vucic, and what with their 'expectations' he and SNS could turn out to be easier to influence than Tadic and company.

vucic -dacic and Nikolic are all sell- outs just yesterday they were the biggest radicals now there a**-lickers just like tadic & friends....

Vucic is an actor who only cares about his own political career. Whether nationalist or moderate, he's going to have to learn how to pick Serbia up off the pavement. People can moan and groan all they want about Kosovo and RS, or charges of genocide at Srebrenica, or Mladic on trial, or NATO expansion into the Balkans. But when they don't have good-paying jobs, and tax revenues are insufficient to uphold critical government spending, and the country is suffering through severe drought in summer or bitter cold in winter as a result of climate change, no one is going to care about the status of Kosovo, whether Ratko is put away for life, or whether the military is aligned with Russia or NATO.

The wider world is a mess and Serbia is being sucked into the vortex along with everybody else. Vucic, Dacic and Nikolic need to think fast and think big.

Comm. Parrisson

"Vucic need not accept instructions, but who knows exactly what support the west provided to help SNS. Certainly this time round the west did not support DS. They may have told Vucic that they helped him to power and he owes them, or that if he doesn't do as he is told, they will try to unseat him at the next elections. Or perhaps there are some millions of 'aid' that Serbia will qualify for..."

Now even you come up with the story about the west influencing the Serbian government. Don't you think the Serbian voters are the ones who choose? Okay, the role of the SPS is a bit shady, with the SNS stepping back behind them though they got the most votes. Furthermore, these political characters seem to be realists enough to realize that their nationalist/extremist pre-election rhetorics don't lead anywhere in real politics.

Amazing... At times I have to pinch myself to see if I'm dreaming. Just a few years ago Vucic was among the most radical nationalists in Serbia. Now he is taking lunch with Germans and receiving instructions from Washington.

Could it be that all of what he used to say was complete lies?
Could it be that this guy was just another one in a long line of fake nationalists?

Yeah, I have some understanding that he changed politically and has moderated, but what I can't understand is when he and his party are copying exactly the same foreign policy as DS. And Washington, Berlin and London expect even more from SNS and the new government? Why? Because in western capitals it was felt that Tadic could not deliver the nationalist vote, so Tadic would say that even if he wanted to make the west happy he could not. In Western capitals Vucic is the man who can deliver, they believe that he, having been a strong nationalist, can persuade the Serbian people to follow his path and thus eventually accept some kind of defeat in Kosovo.
