SCP UK, so you think because a majority does not like something, it is okay to rip them from their democratic rights?
The EU does not say you have to love LGBT's, it says they should be granted the same rights as any other minority group.
If you think that you simply decide to be lesbian, gay or whatever, you are clearly wrong. Do you think anybody enjoys it to be gay in the Balkans? How do you explain that the suicide rate of lesbians, gays and transgender teens is more than 10 times higher compared to heterosexual teens (also in Western Europe)? It is not a sickness or anything, there is no virus or bacteria, not a different brain structure, no genetical difference.
And even if there would be a genetical difference, would you also agree that people in a country where the majority is blonde is allowed to supress dark haired people..? Whoops, this one already happened.
These people just want to be accepted for the way they are, which is the reason why they demonstrate. And do not expect that there is not somebody who can make a minority group out of you. You live in the UK, you belong to the Serbian minority. You also don't want to be beaten up at every corner because you are a Serb or that the government declares that you are not allowed to speak Serbian anymore.
Democracy is about granting certain equal rights to everybody. If these rights are not given, everybody should have at least the right to demonstrate for their equal treatment.

As if this marrying business mentioned in the comments is something new. Not one former Yugoslav republic's people will ever want another to marry with their child ever. Remember the 'Romeo & Julliet' couple from Bosnia during the war? One was Bosnian Muslim while the other was Serbian. Because they were to together, everyone shot at them! This is nothing new. The only real new "threat" to the Balkans is 'Romeo & Romeo'.

@Observer, I think it is you that doesn't understand democracy.

So the EU politically forcing the Croatian government to organize this event when the vast majority of people in Split and Croatia disagree with it is democratic? You must be smoking something. Forcing a nation to allow something which they find abhorent and disgusting is not democratic, rather orders from the outside, that is called imposing.

You clearly did not understand what democracy is about. It is not about a majority infringing the right of minorities.

We will be back next year in Split. You know, it wouldn't be so disruptive if thugs didn't seek to use violence to stop peaceful protesters from assembling. The parade would take all of an hour and there would be no need for whole sections of town to be blockaded off. The Mayor of Split, a homophobe, is interested in pandering to those that support hatred of Gay persons, thus making repeated protests necessary. Furthermore, the reason why there weren't more spectators was likely the result of the violence by those that support his sentiments last year. See you next year, Mr. Mayor. Kisses XOXO.

What he said is actually what 90% of eastern europeans think, but it doesn't matter. In EU "freedom" the majority has no rights, except it supports what the EU wants. The comunity has a saying in what goes around in their city/village.

The gay parade is really embarassing: why does sexuality have to be expressed in public? The gays cannot engage with each-other unless they parade in the city, naked, first? It's all political, let's be serious about it.

"this guy also said that he'd never let a Serb or a Montenegrin marry his daughter"

Serbia you are a most resist nation on this planet! Shame on you and your petty cruel resist comments. We can live nice in Croatia with no community to which you belong to. I would be the first never to let a Serb marry my daughter and infect my family with hate.

“The Split residents have, by ignoring the parade, shown what they think about it, that they are not interested, that they do not want it in their town and that it is not welcome in Split,” he pointed out.

Should there be a public referendum held prior to any form of collective assembly held in Split or something? Must all public gatherings meet the approval of the entire city's population if they are to be held? The purpose of a gay pride parade is mainly so the gays themselves can feel that they can verbalise their own sexuality without any threat from radical conservatives or homophobes; the symbolism associated with that fact is far stronger than any practical purpose which a pride parade serves, because frankly, it serves none. In fact, most public gatherings are like that - they're held in order to serve the interests and/or happiness of the participants, not as some desperate attempt at claiming mass public approval.

How the hell can an idiot like this be elected to parliament in a country which is supposedly about to enter the EU, where political correctness is king and both economic and social neo-liberalism is all rosy and prevalent? Actually, no, why am I even asking? This is Serbia/Croatia we're talking about, after all.

Furthermore, this guy also said that he'd never let a Serb or a Montenegrin marry his daughter, since he doesn't want none of that Orthodox Slavic blood infiltrating his Aryan blut, or something like that, so I don't even know why the hell we should listen to what he has to say, anyway.
