I am an armed American woman, and I greatly admire the Swiss for their tradition of RESPONSIBLE firearm ownership. Serbian people may have guns, but the overall crime rate in Serbia is low and the streets of most cities are quite safe.

I walked around Novi Sad and Beograd on my last vacation alone at night, and had zero problems. I would NOT do this in my hometown of LA, but in Serbia I did not feel in the least bit threatened. This is a propaganda piece meant to demonize a nation that has already been unjustly blamed for a lot of things.

Seriously, the UK has very strict gun control laws yet their street crime rates are far worse and illegal gun trafficking has not ceased. Stop pointing fingers where they do not belong!

The right to bear arms is a basic human right. Only totalitarian regimes insist on knowing everything their citizens do. The fact that there is little gun violence in Serbia proves that the society is largely responsible and ruled by conscience. Guns don't kill people, people do.

If they want to get rid of some of these guns an amnesty and perhaps a small financial recompense would be a start. Some of these guns are little just sitting there, left over from recent conflicts. These guns might find themselves used during major sporting victories or on Serbian new year in the evenings. Or in some villages they are fired when sons are born.

Even though there are guns about, they tend not to be used by crazies (in schools or shopping malls etc) or go off by accident as much as they are in the US. Still, it would be safer if they were handed in.

Yes Avni, the Serbs should be ready for anything. And note that for all the weapons out there illegally, there is remarkably little gun violence. They keep those weapons, but clearly for a larger purpose. We should trust them to do this. They know that there is a lot of pressure on them to do something violent and are that much more steeled to restraint.

that's an interesting study.. what propagandist payed for this?? Serbia was under total embargo and all factories producing weapons were bombed in Bosnia.. it's a good thing to own a gun though.. In switzerland everyone owns a gun and they have the lowest crime rate in the world.. This is nothing but a propaganda..
