Sorry, Mr Swoboda is President of the Progressive Alliance of Socialsts and Democrats within the European Parliament, not Austrian President. My main point remains the same but I should have read the article more carefully. Whoever is the real Austrian President has my deepest apologies.

If the election of Nikolic has indeed upset the European applecart with regard to their policy in the Balkans then perhaps they need a new policy. Nikolic has been democratically elected and therefore his voice represents the will of the people. President of Austria is hardly one of the top positions in European political or diplomatic circles and will become even less so in the eyes of Serbs if the holder shows such blatant disregard for the democratic choices that they make.

Swoboda WHO?

Most Serbs clearly don't give a fat fig who runs the country (so few voted), so long as it's not some Neo-Hapsburg puppet trying to ressurect an old empire.Nikolic will be fine.So long as he's a thorn in the EU's side they'll love him.Good Luck Tomo!!As for impending economic prosperity if they follow the EU path,I think we'll ask the Greeks how well that works!!

"ustrian politicians have poured on Serbia, is it hardly a surprise that they cannot stop looking down their noses upon the southern slavs"

that was their problem in WWI, while they were busy looking down their noses the Serbs drove the end game up their asses

LOL looks like the neo-Hapsburgs are upset that their Balkan policies are in jeopardy. Nothing has changed in 100 years with them :)

The EU must not be deterred by the democratic decision of the Serbian people, he said in a release, adding that "the carefully planned and progressive" integration of the region "has to continue".

...Even if it means by any means possible?

Sounds like the old "Macht Arbeit Frei". After all the vitriol and poison austrian politicians have poured on Serbia, is it hardly a surprise that they cannot stop looking down their noses upon the southern slavs?
