"In Britain the mazimum his family could apply for is £11,000 (about 13,000 Euros). "

And in the States, they'd start off at at least a million. A kid in California was placed in lockup (pretrial detention) and forgotten for 5 days - no food, no water, no toilet. The city is being sued for $20 million. They probably won't get it, but they'll get more than 13,000 euros. (Remember Kovacevic? $900,000 seemed low to Americans who heard about the case.)

BTW, the family was originally not intending to seek damages, not until the appeals court cut the sentences in half. That really seemed like a slap in the face.

Such situations where People are paid compensation cause others to scheme to murder others to gain Compensation Money, and as much as I sympathize with the friends and relatives, I think that proper debate should take place on this matter.

Imagine a situation where a partner finds some one new and wants some cash, then they mat scheme to get Compensation.

The French Government have murdered many innocent People throughout their History, and their spate of mass murder was Libya, and we know of their murders of the Serbian People with NATO.

Since France has paid no one any Foreigners that they murdered any Compensation, then they can at least show that they can do the right thing by their own People and pay Compensation that they have denied others, and pay it to their own Citizens.

Michael Thomas,

He was just a tourist on the street. He was sitting peacefully in the cafe for days watching football on the TV with his friends. He was doing nothing aggressive. I know this, because I know the owners of the club he was beaten to death outside of.

It is also possible that the British Courts would refuse compensation altogether because he was a member of a football gang and possibly looking for trouble. He was not just a tourist attacked in the street.

Serbia is not, however, a proper country. I expect its puppet government to handover anything the French demand.

The killing of Taton is a horrible, indelible stain of shame on Serbia. Not just that he was brutally beaten and killed with metal rods, but that, even on this forum, you sometimes hear Serbs trying to excuse this assault as some sort of "well finally someone is doing something to defend Serbia" (I have heard people make such statements in 'polite' company).

That said, I don't quite understand how the family can ask this money from the Serbian state. I don't understand the logic. How was the interior ministry supposed to act differently? Unless there's some kind of evidence that these attackers should have already been in jail for some reason, a state can't be expected to have complete control of all its citizens.

My sympathies to the family.
