Don't really know why China is in the discussion, but it is only natural that if threatened they will react.
But do you remember another event in history in which Russia was going to place missles in Cuba? Notice Russia has NO missles in Cuba!
(pss, 15 May 2012 18:10)

Notice that the US had not previously placed nuclear missiles in Turkey and Khruschev was reacting to this? No that Kennedy ordered the (non-publicized) withdrawl of these missiles as part of the deal to resolve the Cuba stand off.

" *The US will have to pay huge dollars for their space transport programme. "

The government is in the process of handing the job over to private industry - tests of one company's system are due to start any day now. (They've called off launches a couple of times already, but better safe than sorry.)

If all goes according to plan they'll start be transporting supplies to the Space Station and later, after the bugs have been worked out, astronauts. This will free up government researches to concentrate on Mars.

he point I am making is that if the Americans try to get too close to China's borders and pose a threat then the Chinese will unleash hell like they did in Korea, the UN did not win that war because technically that war is not over and is still stalemate. That is because of Chinese intervention, they are much stronger now than then and I know that because the Yanks are so paranoid and stupid they will get another ass kicking from the Chinese, it's only a matter of time. Russia is also more than capable of kicking American ass.

To all the friends of NATO and the Yanks be very afraid because they will fall.

Well, seems to me you really oughta take your own advice and read some history yourself -- and read carefully.

Briefly, the North attacked the South in June 1950. UN forces came to the South's aid in July and they pushed the North's forces all the way back to the Yalu river at the Chinese border. The Chinese then sent in troops in October and pushed the UN forces back to around the 38th Parallel in the middle of the Korean peninsula. There the war eventually came to a stalemate, negotiations started (which the Chinese took part) and an armistice was eventually signed in 1954. I fail to see how this can be construed as being "forced back to their own borders".

It is clear to the Russians that there is no chance of peaceful co-existence with NATO.

Russian security can only be achieved if NATO is destroyed. Destroying NATO without starting an all out war will take careful planning and will take time.

Russia should arm and train NATO’s many enemies around the world and, over time, break that evil organisation.

It sounds like an orderly changing of the guard. The US is in serious trouble as it has not been able to make a dent in the 9 million or so lost jobs to date plus the EU going further in recession can only point to more pain for all, but this time many countries will not be able to throw money around as they did in the last downturn. Many feel that this one we will all have to tough it out. God help the poor because the wealthy will not.

As the Chinese say we live in very interesting times.

The US and Nato countries have too much to lose trying this project. Firstly what would be the unintended concenquences,

*The US will have to pay huge dollars for their space transport programme.

*The US will have to find another country to supply half of it's Uranium imports or be forced to pay extra.

*Alternate routes and countries would be needed for Afghan ops.

*Then they risk having an uncooperative partner for peace, perhaps risking proliferation and increased Russsian interests in important spheres.

All this at a time of economic uncertainty? Me thinks the Georgian war helped McCain in the polls for a short period and left Georgia without some territory.

This is a defensive system and not nearly powerful enough to counter any possible Russian attack. Russia has enough missiles to wipe out most of the world (as does the U.S.), a system capable of shooting down a couple of missiles would be of no use against an attack by them. To upgrade the system to that point would be truly an economic and technical challenge. With Russia's long-term project to increase its offensive nuclear capability with the Bulava, you have to wonder who is really the potential aggressor here.

Of course I remember the Korean war, where the North invaded the South. The US-led UN forces pushed the aggressor back when it got (illegaly) supported by China. All people know that without the deterent of the superior South Korean and Western forces, the stalinist regime of North Korea would launch another adventure. Nobody, including China, wants war in that region since it would mean massiv damage to all in that region.

It is absolutely understandable to create (missile) defence system, because there are enough lunatics such as the North Korea leadership who would like to get more attention by using force. They did this often enough with their incursions and firing missiles into South Korean and Japanese space. Same goes to Iran, or any other country which might think to attack NATO and its members. In fact, only all (potential) aggressors must fear the shield. That system will only kick in when somebody fires upon NATO, not the other way round. Nobody can insist what NATO does or does not on his soil. It is NATO's only decision to install or remove the shield.

If Russia thinks tp threaten those defence installation by executing a first strike, killing NATO personal, be sure that it will be WW3 with all (nuclear) consequences.

The strategy is to contain Russia and then spread to China, but it’s too little too late as this should have been done when the west had money not now when it’s broke and fighting to stay afloat.

(sj, 14 May 2012 14:01)

I think the big picture must include what’s happening in China. It's literally the only economy holding the global economy together. It’s lending money to Africa. To South America. To Europe. And of course, China is the US biggest creditor.

Recently, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner announced that Washington will back Beijing’s bid in the IMF to make the yuan a global reserve currency.I think there is a deal struck between the US and China to devalue the U.S. dollar against the yuan along with Beijing’s cooperation.

A higher yuan will help China to contain inflation which has been running at more than 5%.On the other hand the US is suffering another disinflationary threat. Real estate prices are sinking again. Stocks are looking toppy. Many commodity prices are starting to fall.
So a grand bargain has been made between US and China. China needs some disinflation while Washington needs to stoke up inflation. Therefore, while the US leaders are blaming Benjing in public in reality they both manage the dollar's devaluation and it's future replacement as the world's currency.

It will fragment much the same as everything else is doing in the west and anyone who doesn't think that this is the case watch this space. It is going to crumble bigtime.

Russia is a much stronger country than it was in the 90's and is plenty capable of giving NATO a bloody nose and they know it. All empires crumble and NATO is no different, the only difference is that it will happen more quickly than people realise.

This is more hot air than actual fact. The missile shield is much more complex than a radar dish and a few interceptors. It comprises the whole US Navy (Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense System), bases all around the world, satellites, NORAD, etc.. North Korea and Iran are only the current threats, but this defence system can be used for defence against all aggressors. Some potential aggressors already note how pissed they are about this pure defence project, which speaks volumes.

NATO claims that the aim of the shield is "to defend against missile threats from Iran and North Korea, rather than Russia".
Moreover, the U.S. media recently published parts of internal Pentagon and U.S. congressional reports claiming that the shield is ineffective and too expensive.
The NATO is out of control. Who commands this military aggressor, I thought it was the USA? If the US congress and Pentagon disapprove of this questionable shield, why is the NATO saying is will proceed with building it? The last thing the world needs in the 21st century is a new arms race. When will the Western hawks learn? Or is the profit from building this new military toy too lucrative to pass up for the American military complex?

NATO always needs bad guys to explain it existence. Korea is 11 000 km away from the Atlantics. While Iran is conflicting no one in Europe. So the defense systems are deployed either against Russia or against the aliens to come. Also it’s a strange phrase “rather”. In the context it sounds as we are only the 3-rd target after Iran and Korea. Very persuasive !

Against N. Korea??????? If you bothered to look at the atlas, you'd see that if N Korea were to send a missile towards Yankee Land, it would make more sense to send it via the Pacific Ocean in the direction of California rather than via the land mass of Eurasia and crossing over the territories of so many nations.

"NATO claims that the aim of the shield is "to defend against missile threats from Iran and North Korea, rather than Russia"."

Against N. Korea??????? If you bothered to look at the atlas, you'd see that if N Korea were to send a missile towards Yankee Land, it would make more sense to send it via the Pacific Ocean in the direction of California rather than via the land mass of Eurasia and crossing over the territories of so many nations.

The only aggresor is NATO, they are the only ones waging war against the small guy. If they thought they could take on Russia and China they'd have done that already. They know if they try what the consequeces will be. Russia and China are more than capable of stopping NATO in their tracks, to brag about NATO aggresion is foolish on your part.

Remember the Korean war when the so called UN forces led by the the US aggresor were stopped by the Chinese because they got too close to their borders, well China has their own deterent and they would use it if the need arises make no mistake. NATO will push it's luck with the big guys at some stage because they believe that they are invincible and that is their weakness and it will be their downfall, that day is not far distant.

NATO will not survive as an organisation because the people in Europe do not want a war on their soil started by the bloody stupid Americans. The Americans have not tasted total war on their soil as the Europeans have done and do not understand we do not want another, what we do want and will achieve is for the Americans so go home to their own land and stop poking their beaks into other folks business.

Let the Americans look after their hungry and homless instead of murdering innocents around this globe.

It’s the armaments industrial complexes that are driving this little puppy. Much like Ronald Regan’s Star Wars program where billions were spent on researching the impossible and then getting a sixth rate product like the Patriot Missile System.
This is more hot air than actual fact. The system they would like to deploy is far well beyond their reach than anyone could imagine – the technology is just not there so the interest groups and some chicken hawks in Washington are pushing for a deployment of some kind. The strategy is to contain Russia and then spread to China, but it’s too little too late as this should have been done when the west had money not now when it’s broke and fighting to stay afloat.
I think they believe they are going to frighten the Russians into giving them some kind of concession, but old Vald is back at the helm and he is no fool.
To NATO, deploy away.

Could be right, but maybe it is all getting a little more media attention than it deserves. Probably more like a dog marking its territory than actually putting up a defense against Russian nukes. (After all I am sure everyone is aware that should either the US or Russia or even China release one nuclear missle it will be the end of the civilized world, as there is no way a single nuke without reciprical ones will ever happen)

Amer

pre 11 godina

This is a defensive system and not nearly powerful enough to counter any possible Russian attack. Russia has enough missiles to wipe out most of the world (as does the U.S.), a system capable of shooting down a couple of missiles would be of no use against an attack by them. To upgrade the system to that point would be truly an economic and technical challenge. With Russia's long-term project to increase its offensive nuclear capability with the Bulava, you have to wonder who is really the potential aggressor here.

The point I am making is that if the Americans try to get too close to China's borders and pose a threat then the Chinese will unleash hell like they did in Korea, the UN did not win that war because technically that war is not over and is still stalemate.

But do you remember another event in history in which Russia was going to place missles in Cuba? Notice Russia has NO missles in Cuba!

Déjà vu

pre 11 godina

Tomorrow we are all (insert country name were missle shield is deployed).

Notice that the US had not previously placed nuclear missiles in Turkey and Khruschev was reacting to this? No that Kennedy ordered the (non-publicized) withdrawl of these missiles as part of the deal to resolve the Cuba stand off.
