Tomislav Nikolić said on Monday that a Serbia led by the SNS would refuse membership of the EU if Europe should set Kosovo's independence as its condition.

"Good neighborly relations with Kosovo. No nonsense at all. Kosovo in UN and then Serbia in EU."
(BMX, 17 April 2012 20:46)

As you probably know, it's not up to Serbia to decide if Kosovo will become an UN member. It's Russia and China, the veto powers, who will not allow some self proclaimed split-off country like Kosovo, created by an ethnic minority, to become a 'real' state.

Sure, every EU member has the right to veto. But then they better find another excuse, because arguing with such a nonsense would make the member state look stupid :)
(Comm. Parrisson, 17 April 2012 17:38)

It wouldn't be a veto, it'd simply be a refusal to ratify Serbia's membership. But for now they're giving Serbia a carrot on a stick treatment. They're going to make it so Serbia thinks it can have EU membership, they're going to let Serbia walk all the way up to the line when it comes to EU membership; then they'll drop the bombshell on Serbia.

Look stupid? Nah. Everyone already knows this is going to happen. Also it won't be just one member state, it'll be several. The EU3 (France, Germany, UK) aka the countries which run the EU are bound to do it too, everything has to be on their terms. Serbia will have done everything in accordance of the Community acquis charter, but there will be that last hurdle for Serbia called Kosovo. They're not stupid enough to give Serbia EU membership while it disputes Kosovo's independence; they've already invested far too much in Kosovo to give Serbia what it wants.

Not to mention only 5 EU members don't recognise Kosovo and that number is bound to decrease in the near future. There is no chance Serbia is going to join the EU unless it does as the EU says. Serbia is already taking orders from the EU.

Serbia is now in EU candidate status limbo with Turkey. Enjoy it you two!

I wonder: why would Serbia be willing, or even expected, to accept the loss above all of northern Kosovo?

Alongside money, what the EU also offers, if people look at the banlieux of France, parts of London and northern England, is the unchecked spread of radical Islam. This is a mortal danger to European democracy and enlightenment - but people still prefer to be politically correct for fear of being painted as "radical right".

It is hard to imagine a hate preacher in Banja Luka or northern Kosovo calling for Christians to be slaughtered - but quite possible in the EU.

Maybe an infection of radical Islam might not be worth the EU's money?

Pretty please, say no to EU and do all of us a favour. Such a broken down place as SRB with or without KS does not belong to EU anyway. Maybe in a couple of decades or a generation later. Same goes to Romania and Bulgaria, but it is too late now.

Kosovo will join the EU in 2014, Vojvodina in 2015 and Guinea Bissau and Sao Tome & Principe between 2015-16. Congratulation to you all!

What´s left of Serbia will become "Tadicistan" and join the EU in 2025 according to my sources i usually eavesdrop on, in my lavatory business here in Brussels.

Simple. EU members who recognise Kosovo can refuse to ratify Serbia's membership until Serbia recognises Kosovo.

However, Nikolić added that he had "not heard about the recognition being required either in Brussels, Washington or London".

Of course not, even some EU members do not recognize Kosovo (and this won't change, it's a principled stance), how can it be a condition for Serbia?

If Nikolic means what he says that good luck to him, democracy entitles him to this view and allows the voters to support him if they agree. What all those in Serbia should realise is that, irrespective of what the politicians say, the ordinary citizens of the EU couldn't really care less whether Serbia joins or not. If you prefer to retain a claim to Kosovo rather than join the EU then fill your boots, I for one won't be pleading with you not to do so. Every new member from the balkans costs the existing members a lot of money and there will not be too many tears shed if this money can be spent elsewhere.

He knows fully that recognising will be a condition in the near future, he must be seeing that less and less people are in favour of EU membership. He is the new EU man and this is nothing but talk.

As a citizen of a EU all I can say to all this declarations of the presidential candidates (God save Serbia) and good luck on your way back to the '90-is.. I dont think that ordinary citizens of this country would prefer that option.. Wake up and don't let this guy take you there as we all know how it ended ....

Serbia will probably join the EU in 2020.

If Serbs want to enjoy a EUROPARTY before 2020 they should go to Zagreb on 1 July 2013 to celebrate the accession of Croatia to the EU.
