"Russia has blatantly set a precedent in the Caucasus by recognising Abkhazia and South Ossetia."

A precedent - but only when it is in Russia's self-interest.
Independence for Trans-Dnestr, Abkhazia and Yugo-Ossetia, as this is in Russia's interest, giving an opportunity of weakening neighbours and gaining territory when the moment is right (e.g. 1945: East Prussia, Moldova, Western Ukraine etc).

But no independence for Chechnya.

And of course, to the delight of Serbs, no independence for Kosovo.
But to the disappointment of Serbs, no independence for Republika Serpska (at least not yet). Not first and foremost because Russia cares about the Serbs - the poker with the United States, along with private thieving, is the big chess move; all the other mentioned countries are just small pieces on the chess board.

Russian support for an independent Kosovo, or Republika Serpska, only if it is in Russia's self-interest.

It was the West which set a precedent in Kosovo by recognising its independence.

Thanks for this article, I did not read about this in other European press organs.

I used to work in Human Rights journalism dealing with the North Caucasus, it is always satisfying when journalists write a factual account of matters, rather than "deciding" for the readers who are the good and who are the bad guys aka Cowboys and Indians.

The general view is that the Chechen insurgency was a fight for national liberation, which mutated into a pan-Islamic insurgency, as is written in this article.

Whenever the West supports, or funds, terrorist groups, they become rebels or freedom fighters, as in the case of the KLA in the late 90's. But if the West does not support groups fighting for their independence, then they are terrorists, militants, insurgents, and the like. The Western supported media picks up on this labeling too, and it becomes official, in their eyes.
