Minister in favor of lower income tax

The priority of Serbia's next government should be to reduce taxes and contributions on salaries from 64 to 40 percent, says Minister Nebojša Ćirić.

First and foremost taxes are high because the administration of these things, and to a certain degree the entire society, is stuck in 'communism' mode.

high taxes definitely 'came first'

Danilo, my gripe is with the state expenditures and the obvious campaigning being done by young Minister Ciric. If the state could cut some of the fat away from its budget, the statutory payroll tax rate wouldn't have to be so high to start with. Yes, high rates over a potentially broad base will lead to mass tax evasion and "gray" economies, but high government spending is the root of the problem and one of the primary causes for the high rates. Which came first, the high rate or the evasive activities that led to the necessity for a high rate? I can't say for sure. I do understand your logic, and you are right, but I smell campaign politicking in this and I think that bureaucratic outlays need to be reduced to help relieve some of the burden on the state's finances and on its people. I do hope more people can get legit social insurance and pension benefits; I personally know people who do not receive their entitlements because they are not legally employed.

A tax cut like this could have the result of the state collecting more taxes as employers decide to declare their employees and employees also request it so they can have proper health insurance and pension payments made.

Right on Danilo!!! This has been the case in most if nto all countries in CEE!

Slavko.

Payroll taxes are way too high. This is causing (and the article states this) employers to pay under the table, ie not pay any taxes.

Additionally, this would bring the tax rates in line with neighbouring countries. Also, this is important when it comes to foreign investments. People are going to start choosing Macedonia instead of Serbia for their small enterprises.

Bravo, Slavko. I am so sick and tired of these Serbian politicians (liars), that I want to explode. I am just concerned that if we throw these current bums out of office, we may get new bums that are even worse. And there goes another 4 years more of suffering for the Serbian people. Maybe politicians should come with a "return if not totally satisfied guarantee"? Wouldn't that be sweet?

So, Ciric, you guys want to cut payroll/wage taxes by 24%? Awesome, great idea. Just one thing: where else are you going to stick it to the Serbian businessmen and workers? We all know you are not going to cut government expenditures by a similar percentage, so where will you get your precious revenue to help fund your bloated bureaucracy and haphazard spending? Sounds like a classic campaign promise to me...oh wait, it is!
