Romanian opposition "related to Schengen veto"

Behind Romania's opposition to Serbia bid to become EU candidate is its inability to join the EU Schengen zone passport-free area, a Romanian official suggests.

Leonard Orban quoted by ACT media
'Romania believes that, in Serbia, there are serious issues as regards the observance of the national minorities rights, in conditions in which this keeps to the political criterion for the start of accession negotiations to the European Union, said on Wednesday Minister of European Affairs Leonard Orban.

'Our interpretation is very clear: namely that serious problems exist as concerns the observance of national minorities rights in Serbia,' said Orban, answering a journalist's question. In the context, he stressed that for the accession of Romania and of the other countries to the EU, as well, observance of the political criterion was imposed prior to negotiations.

'The political criterion also means respect for the national minorities rights in those countries. (...) Romania requires an extremely important thing, it is about respecting the political criterion by Serbia, specifically respect for the rights of national minorities', he added.

He also stressed that, on Tuesday, at the General Affairs Council, Romania did not block Serbia to obtain the candidate status for accession to the European Union, but 'wished that the discussion is raised at the level of the European Council', convened on March 1.

Regarding the negative comments made by some foreign ministers of the European Union member states, following Romania's decision, Leonard Orban noted that they were rather 'hotheaded' reactions.
'In discussions of this kind, in negotiations of this kind, reactions tend to be hotheaded', said the Romanian Minister of European Affairs. Leonard Orban attended on Wednesday a conference on issues connected to the European Social Fund.

I've noticed some gullible comments made earlier which are simply embarrassing (for those who made them). A stupid cow (the person mentioned in the article, quite an active member of the opposition in its own country) throws a stone in the lake and everybody jumps to find it.. how stupid is that? There is no connection between the Dutch stance on the flying saucer (i.e., shengen) and Romania's side note that Serbia, after 20 years of ignoring this wallach issue, is suddenly "surprised" (everybody seems quite surprised lately, isn't it?) that an issue which was raised even last month in bilateral talks finds its way in this very 'important' day for Europe (3 million strong-headed more for Europe, we should mourn actually). Romania didn't want to make a big deal of this issue and kept it private, being forced to act upon it in a moment in which actually Serbia can be constrained to play by the rules.. you know why everybody was so 'surprised'? because of the main pawns, bildt the viking warrior who was also EU's rep to Serbia during Srebenica's 'incident' (!), who constantly ignored and disinformed EU relative to the abuses; the other one is the german equivalent of a plum, who is regarded as not so bright even in its own country of origin.. how do I know we are talking about a false perception? well, the two idiots talked about Romania's stance on minorities not being an european one!! So let me see.. it's about Serbia and its troubled past with the minorities, it's a subject which is almost always in some form on the table of every major EU summit, it must be a crucial issue since EU is made of so many countries with so many minorities, and yet.. ooha! it's gone, it has become non-european!! oh, just give me a f$#@ break.. I'm glad, BTW, that b92 is so adamant of showing that wallachs are actually serbian and not whatever. serbs, good luck in EU, nobody wants you left outside, but hey, man, just lighten the f%$#@ up, we are tired of your BS (we've noticed you know how to brown-nose when needed too) and just try to be better neighbours, cause you many times suck at it. and I almost forgot: leave your fanaticism at home.

The Party of Hungarians in Romania has no ideology and would join even Satana's Government if they get free hand in the two counties were they run the show - and yes, they do a ruthless job not only in oppressing the Romanians living there as minority, but also in crushing any opposition from inside the Hungarian community (and this is the reason for another two Hungarian parties being founded during last years, both of them of extremist orientation, and one even openly supported by Viktor Orban Govt. in Budapest).

That's all, folks. It is not about Netherlands, Serbia or Kosovo, it is about Romanian stupid domestic politics.

Well written .Hungarians are willing to form a coaliton even with devil if it guarantes them dominating ruthlessly other peoples.Excelent summery.Their history is all about licking someone's boots(Hitler,Habsburgs,Turks etc) while trying to step on other peoples' head. The worst kind of behaviour you can expect even from a collegue at the workplace.

Romanian Warrior: What kind of Germans do you know? I can assure you that nobody except of maybe those stupid and lost two percent (and in the West (closer to NL)) who go for the far right party "NPD" would see NL as a lost territory. Haha, such a bullshit! ^^ The thing with the language has some truth. Dutch and German are close, just as Swedish/Dutch/German/Danish/English... You know why? because they are close or neighbouring countries. The people were not send from God into their state boundaries. :) The Netherlands have a long tradition of trade, just as the Hanse region. This influences the language as well. And in some west German regions (such as Cologne) people spoke practicly the same language until the 18th century as in southern NL today. So you could also say German is a dialect of Dutch. State boundaries were not always as strong as in the 19th century. It is still about people we are talking about and (cultural) borders are a constructed thing. Do you think there were some "Dutch" without a language, they knocked at Germany's door and asked for a variation of their language? The same applies for the Balkans. All this fight for "oh, this is originally blablabla" makes me sometimes laugh and sometimes really sad. As if the different "nations" were sent by aliens from different planets and only one "nation" had a culture and the others copied it.

I live in the Netherlands right now (no, I'm not Dutch) and as far as I can see it, Geert Wilders was a short phenomenon and many people are ashamed of him or regret that they elected him.
About Drugs/Prostitution whatever... Just because you handle a topic liberal does not mean that it appears more in society. There are a lot more people smoking weed in Germany, France or Belgium than in the Netherlands. Only if you handle something openly, you can improve a situation. Do you think there are less drugs and prostitution in those countries were it is prohibited? You are wrong. In those countries you have more human trafficking, lost people without any place where somebody helps them and so on.
Dutch gangs/mafia? I almost fell on the floor while laughing. Try "mafia" on wikipedia and enter either "Serbian/Romanian/Bulgarian/Italian/Albanian". As Joe said, its just a small percentage and most people are highly respected for their work and they don't have/make problems and they are very welcomed. As far as I experienced it in the last three years, (almost all) Dutch people really don't care where you come from, with whom you are in love with or what you do as long as you don't limit other peoples rights and security.

@Joe A: not completly right, I think Denmark pays the most per capita (double of Germany, btw) , but then NL should be the next in the list..

Some info for people not familiar with the details of Romanian domestic politics:

- Ms. Corina Cretu is a former journalist who, in mid 90s, decided to enter politics and became the spokesperson of the former Romanian President Ion Iliescu (a second-line Communist, who sought to improve the Romanian socialism after Ceausescu, with the result of delaying Romania's development with up to 5 years, compared with our neighbors evolution since 1990). After Iliescu withdraw himself from the first line of the Social-Democrat Party (PSD), Ms. Cretu was placed on the party list for European Parliament (which is seen by Romanian politicians as a sort of distant place to send people who are not useful anymore, but cannot be just discarded from the party). To make long story short, Ms. Cretu is somebody just because she is MEP, not by her own intellectual capabilities. But she is a very big critic of the current president Traian Basescu (since PSD is in opposition) and would say anything to discredit his policies, including the foreign ones. Since all this interest for Romanians in diaspora is a trademark of Basescu regime, she goes against it. In the same time, she uses this opportunity to give a kick to the minor partner in the current government of the Basescu's Democratic Liberal Party - namely the Hungarian minority party. Their support keeps Basescu govt. in place, therefore the current opposition (Social-Democrats and the Liberal Party) are very keen to point out the abuses of Hungarians at local level, in the two counties were they are majority (in the middle of Transylvania). Sad enough, the reality is as follows:
- Basescu foreign policy is as much a populist one as his domestic policies (meaning he gives not a penny on Romanians living abroad, but this remained one of the few propaganda lines he may hope to use, since internally he lost any support)
- When in power, the Social-Democrats of Ms. Cretu did (almost) nothing for Romanians living abroad, in France, Spain or Timoc Valley, and most probably will not do more than current govt.
- Many Romanians are convinced that both Social-Democrats and Liberals (today in opposition) will accept the small Hungarian Party in a future govt., for the sake of securing a majority in Parliament
- The Party of Hungarians in Romania has no ideology and would join even Satana's Government if they get free hand in the two counties were they run the show - and yes, they do a ruthless job not only in oppressing the Romanians living there as minority, but also in crushing any opposition from inside the Hungarian community (and this is the reason for another two Hungarian parties being founded during last years, both of them of extremist orientation, and one even openly supported by Viktor Orban Govt. in Budapest).

Romania is not raising the Vlach rights as retaliation for Schengen dispute. As a matter of fact these two issues are not linked.
When Romania joined EU, the country was requested to improve ethnic minorities' rights and, as a result, minorities in Romania have nowadays more rights than elsewhere in Europe, including representatives in the Parliament for each ethnic minority.
The Vlach issue was on the diplomatic agenda for many years but Serbia refused to grant cultural rights to Romanian speaking Vlach. If it was normal to put pressure on Romania to improve minority rights, why then is now unacceptable for Romania to condition Serbia's candidature upon improving the condition of Timok Valley Vlachs, which are not recognised at speakers of Romanian language? Romania wants that Vlachs in Serbia have the same rights that ethnic Serbs in Romania enjoy. And another thing: before the unification of 1859, the southern part of Romania was known as Great Valachia.

While I find it absolutely credible what Ms. Cretu thinks about Romania's motive regarding the blocking of Serbian candidacy, she somewhat discredits herself about this gibberish about the extremist Hungarian party. I do not find any grounds of comparison and justification to kick a good one into Budapest and the Hungarian minority again.

Dutch gangs came to Romania with drugs, phedophilia and tax evasion?
Seriously dude? That is of all places and ages. Tax evasion? Holland is nr. 1 in collecting tax. So we can bail out countries like Greece. NL is per capita the biggest contributor to the EU and has been so for decades. Compared with populations, NL pays more to the Greek bailout than anybody else. And you said yourself that NL is the biggest investor in Romania. Why is that? Because we have a nose for business.
And about positive discrimination: well, isn't that exactly what the Romananian government wants in Serbia for the Vlachs/Romanians?
Regarding Geert Wilders: everybody makes the mistake to react to this guy. Then he leans backwards and laughs at everybody. The best thing to do is to ignore him. The point is that NL last year send back a record people from Eastern Europe that decided to come there to rob. Does that mean that all Eastern Europeans are like that? Of course not.

Listen, I welcome everybody to NL who makes a valuable contribution to the country and to their own lives. We don't need people who abuse our hospitality.

Romanian warrior has no clue what he is talking about. I am Dutch and there might be some simularities between the German and Dutch languages but they are separate languages. Why then is German taught at school -just like English and French- in the Netherlands: because they are separate languages. This whole thing about that is being played by Romania about the Vlachs in Serbia to 'get even with NL' is just childish. It is being played over Serbia's back. NL will not lose sleep if Serbia will become candidate or not. Neither will it give in to blackmail by Romania. We have nothing against Romanians but Romanian gangs are stealing copper left and right in NL and steal money from people using their bank cards by using skimmers. Next to that, both Bulgaria and Romania are not doing much to fight corruption. These are the reasons for not allowing Bulgaria and Romanian to Schengen. To use Serbia candidate's bid is both pointless and childish and will only blow back in Romania's face.

"Bucharest should not use the Vlachs in Serbia to indirectly deliver a blow to the Netherlands, she was also quoted as saying."

Why is the delay of Serbian candidate status a blow to the Netherlands?
