Serbia certainly stands to lose a lot if it loses its EU orientation: its visa free access, and certain funds, the main traffic will bypass Serbia etc. What is the EU going to lose? Nothing! Indeed many curse the South Eastern enlargement! Greece is bankrupt, Bulgaria and Romania seem corrupt. But those three provide the EU with what it needs from strategic point to view. Would Russian orientated Serbia cause any harm to the EU? Hardly! So from Western point of view if Russia could be propitiated by acquiring a sphere of influence in Serbia, many in the West think this is a good idea! Europe is weary of enlargement. Russia will fork over money at the rate of 20 cents to the dollar in exchange for controlling interest in SErbian assets, and China will loan money to Serbia to pay Chinese companies to do work in Serbia. In other words China hands the money to Chinese and then SErbia makes payments to China.
