Croatian war crimes suspect pleads not guilty

Croat wartime Assistant Interior Minister and former adviser to the Interior Ministry Tomislav Merčep pleaded not guilty at the start of his trial in Zagreb.

He was the one who really started the violence and terror in Vukovar. The Croatian government didn't want any area with Serbs to remain peaceful, so it backed men like him.
"Merčeš stands accused of murder and torture of 52 Serbs, 43 of whom were murdered, while three are listed as missing."
He was involved in ordering the deaths and torture of MANY more Serbs than that. Just one of his men, Miro Bajramovic, said he himself was responsible for the deaths of 86 mostly Serb civilians. And there were several more men taking direct orders from Mercep.
